Namespaces
Applies To: Windows Server 2008
DFS Namespaces enables you to group shared folders that are located on different servers into one or more logically structured namespaces. Each namespace appears to users as a single shared folder with a series of subfolders. However, the underlying structure of the namespace can consist of numerous shared folders that are located on different servers and in multiple sites.
This structure increases availability and automatically connects users to shared folders in the same AD DS site, when available, instead of routing them over wide area network (WAN) connections.
Note
Most tasks require you to be a member of the Domain Admins group in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), unless you have been delegated the appropriate authority. To manage a remote server, you might also need to be a member of local Administrators group on the server that you want to manage. For more information see Delegate Management Permissions for DFS Namespaces.
