Limiting Newsgroup Enumeration in IIS 6.0

Use the Find Newsgroups dialog box to limit the number of newsgroups that will be displayed when you select Newsgroups, which is beneath the NNTP virtual server node.

Potentially, a server can store thousands of newsgroups; in some cases, it might not be possible to enumerate all of them. Administrators may want to filter the newsgroups that will be enumerated. You can filter newsgroups by type, by number, or both.

Important

You must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer to perform the following procedure or procedures. As a security best practice, log on to your computer by using an account that is not in the Administrators group, and then use the runas command to run IIS Manager as an administrator. At a command prompt, type runas /User:Administrative_AccountName "mmc %systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc".

Procedures

To limit the number of enumerated newsgroups

  1. In IIS Manager, expand the local computer, and then expand the NNTP virtual server that you want.

  2. Right-click Newsgroups, and then click Limit groups enumeration.

  3. In the Newsgroups field, type the kind of the newsgroup you want to display when Newsgroup is selected. All other types will be filtered out. Use wildcards, such as alt.*. In this example, only newsgroups under the alt hierarchy would be visible to users. By default, every kind of newsgroup is enumerated.

    Note

    You can also type the name of a specific newsgroup in this space, but then only that newsgroup will be visible. Only one wildcard or one newsgroup can be entered at a time.

  4. If you do not want to have a limit on the number of enumerated newsgroups, clear the Limit number of items on the result pane check box. This check box is selected by default.

  5. In Maximum number of items, type the maximum number of newsgroups that you want to enumerate on this virtual server. This limit will only apply when the Limit number of items on the result pane check box is selected. The default is 100 newsgroups.
