Hosts File Changes May Be Detected Slowly

Updated: September 2011

Applies To: Windows HPC Server 2008, Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

If you manually change the hosts file on the head node (for example, by changing the value of the manage flag and saving the file), the automatic operation on the head node that discovers the configuration change can take up to 20 minutes to occur. During this time, you may be unable to perform certain operations on the cluster nodes that require the hosts file.

Workaround

After changing the hosts file, to ensure that the change is discovered, stop and restart the HPC Management Service on the head node. You can use one of a variety of methods to do this. For example, at an elevated command prompt, type the following commands:

net stop HPCManagement
net start HPCManagement
