Use the virtual device with a static IP address (Compact 2013)

When your virtual devices can’t access a DHCP server, you can use a static IPv4 address to connect Platform Builder to your virtual devices. As long as the virtual device is on the same subnet as the computer that runs Platform Builder, Platform Builder will still automatically recognize and respond to the BOOTME messages.

Use the sample virtual device with a static IPv4 address

If you use the sample virtual disk files that installed with Platform Builder, use following procedure to disable DHCP and assign a static IP address to the virtual device.

To assign a static IPv4 address to your virtual device

  1. Start the virtual device. When the device displays the Configuration menu prompts, press the Spacebar to open the Main menu.

  2. On the Main menu, type 4 to open the Network Settings menu.

  3. On the Network Settings menu, type 4 (Enable/disable DHCP), and then type y to disable DHCP.

  4. When the device returns to the Network Settings menu, type 5 (Set IP address), and then enter a valid IPv4 address in the format NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN. Note that:

    • The IPv4 address must be on the same subnet as your IDE.
    • If you are using an internal virtual switch, the IPv4 address must be on the same subnet as the Autoconfiguration IPv4 address of the virtual switch. To find the Autoconfiguration IPv4 address of the virtual switch, open a command window on the physical computer that runs your hypervisor. Run ipconfig, then look for the name of the virtual switch, as shown in the following example:

  5. When the device returns to the Network Settings menu, type 0 (Exit and continue).

  6. When the device returns to the Main menu, type 7 (Save settings), and then type 0 (Exit and continue).

Tip

If you install Platform Builder on the same physical computer as your hypervisor, you can use an internal virtual switch to connect to your virtual devices. To create an internal virtual switch, see the Create a virtual switch or virtual network procedure in Use Hyper-V to create a virtual machine, and under Create virtual switch, select Internal.
