Windows Media DRM 10 for Devices (Windows Embedded CE 6.0)

1/6/2010

Microsoft® Windows Media® DRM 10 for Devices is a digital rights management technology used to protect audio and video content on mobile and embedded devices. It works with content that has been encoded in Microsoft® Windows Media® 10.

Protected content is encrypted and requires a separate license to decrypt it. Protected content can be distributed in various ways, such as over the Internet. Users cannot play protected content until they get their own license for it. Protected content remains protected even when it is copied or moved; if one user shares a protected content file with friends, the friends must still acquire their own licenses before they can play the content.

The license, which is separate from the content, contains a combination of rights and rules, such as expiration dates or the number of times the content can be played. The flexibility of the separate license allows different licenses to be issued as needed for the same content. For example, the content owner could issue a free license that allows a user to play the content only five times, and a license for a fee that allows the user to play the content an unlimited number of times. Licenses are issued to and bound to one device and cannot be copied or shared. If a user tries to play protected content and does not have a valid license, information in the content triggers the license acquisition process in the media player.

Implementation Considerations

The modules that implement DRM are not included with Windows Embedded CE. You must obtain these and other assets separately from Microsoft. You will not be able to implement a functional and compliant DRM solution until you have obtained them.
