Programming Tools

[Indexing Service is no longer supported as of Windows XP and is unavailable for use as of Windows 8. Instead, use Windows Search for client side search and Microsoft Search Server Express for server side search.]

The phrase "programming tool" refers here to a variety of objects. It can be a development environment (such as Visual Studio) that produces an executable Indexing Service application. Or, it can be an execution environment (like Microsoft Internet Explorer or Windows Script Host) that hosts Indexing Service scripts. It can even be a complete service (such as IIS) that provides an integrated web server environment for Indexing Service.

The following table lists the major tools available for performing Indexing Service tasks and gives a brief description of each.

Tool Description
Internet Information Services (IIS) A service that provides a programming environment and foundation for hosting Internet and Web applications, including Active Server Pages (ASP), and ISAPI applications. For additional information, see Windows Server and IIS.
Internet Explorer A Web browser that provides features such as dynamic HTML (DHTML) and ActiveX scripting engines to support Web application development. For additional information, see Internet Explorer.
Windows Script Host A language-independent execution environment that hosts scripting engines for languages such as VBScript and JScript. For additional information, see Windows Script Host.
Visual Studio An integrated development environment (IDE) that provides a suite of compilers, linkers, libraries, and other components for Windows application development. For additional information, see Visual Studio.
