Modify Permissions for a User

Over time, changing administrative and project needs might require that you change the permissions at the collection-level or project-level for a user in Visual Studio Team Foundation Server. Before you change the permissions, consider whether it might be more efficient to remove the individual user and instead add the user to a group that already has the appropriate permissions.

Required Permissions

To modify project-level permissions for a user in Team Foundation Server, you must be a member of the Project Administrators group or have the View-Project-Level Information and Edit Project-Level Information permissions set to Allow. To modify collection-level permissions for a user in Team Foundation Server, you must be a member of the Project Collection Administrators group or have the View Collection-Level Information and Edit Collection-Level Information permissions set to Allow. To modify user permissions at the collection level

  1. In Team Explorer, connect to the team project collection for which you are modifying user permissions.

  2. Right-click the server that is running Team Foundation Server, point to Team Project Collection Settings, and then click Security.

    As an alternative, you can click the server that is running Team Foundation Server, open the Team menu, point to Team Project Collection Settings, and then click Security.

    The Global Security dialog box opens.

  3. In Users and Groups, click the user whose permissions you want to modify.

  4. In Permissions, select or clear the appropriate check boxes.

    If you want the user's permissions to be controlled by collection-level or project-level groups to which they also belong, clear both the Allow and Deny check boxes.

  5. Click Close.

To modify user permissions at the project level

  1. In Team Explorer, connect to the team project for which you are modifying user permissions.

  2. Right-click the project, point to Team Project Settings, and then click Security.

    As an alternative, you can click the project, open the Team menu, point to Team Project Settings, and then click Security.

    The Project Security dialog box opens.

  3. In Users and Groups, click the user whose permissions you want to modify.

  4. In Permissions, select or clear the appropriate check boxes.

    If you want the user's permissions to be controlled by collection-level or project-level groups to which they also belong, clear both the Allow and Deny check boxes.

  5. Click Close.
