The Infrastructure Planning and Design Guide for Windows Server 2008 File Services includes the following seven-step process:
Step 1: Determine the Scope of the File Services Project. The focus of this step is to define the goals of the project so that these can be applied to the design to ensure its applicability and success.
Step 2: Determine the Files, Servers, and Clients That Will Be Included. This step involves assessing the current File Services infrastructure to define the scope of any redesign that might be required.
Step 3: Assess the Need for Replication or Caching. In this step, inventory collected in Step 2 is examined to determine whether replication or caching may be needed.
Step 4: Design the BranchCache Infrastructure. This step involves determining the appropriate mode of BranchCache for each branch and the design of the infrastructure.
Step 5: Design the DFS Replication Infrastructure. This step involves designing the DFS Replication infrastructure.
Step 6: Design the File Services Infrastructure. This step involves designing the File Services infrastructure.
Step 7: Determine Whether Namespace Services Will Be Required. This step involves deciding whether to implement a DFS Namespace in the organization.
