Prepare to deploy a software update
Warning
When you have installed an update, you cannot uninstall it from the system. There is no roll-back process available.
Before you install the update:
Document your current deployment to determine what is unique in your farm. Document the deployment.xml file and any customizations that you have applied.
You can use different techniques to gather information about your deployment, such as manual inspection, comparisons by using tools such as Windiff.exe, or by using Windows PowerShell commands.
Back up your deployment. See Backup and restore (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint).
Recommended:
We recommend that you have a full backup of the current system before you apply the update.
If possible, create a similar pre-production system with the same configuration as your current system and test the update on that system before you apply the update to your production system.

The software update is delivered as an executable that updates the binaries and registry keys. After you have run the executable, you must run the post-setup configuration script in patch mode (update mode).
