How to Determine the First Clustered Mailbox Server Installed in a Single Copy Cluster

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 will reach end of support on April 11, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Applies to: Exchange Server 2007, Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Exchange Server 2007 SP2, Exchange Server 2007 SP3

This topic explains how to determine the first clustered mailbox server (CMS) installed in a single copy cluster (SCC). In an SCC that contains more than one CMS, there is a specific removal order that must be followed. Specifically, the first CMS installed in the cluster must always be the last CMS that is uninstalled. Thus it is necessary to determine which CMS was installed first before uninstalling a CMS from a single copy cluster that contains more than one CMS.

You can use the ADSI Edit tool to determine which CMS was installed first by reading the value of the msExchResponsibleMTAServer attribute of each CMS server object in Active Directory. The ADSI Edit tool is included with the Windows Support Tools. The value for the msExchResponsibleMTAServer attribute will include the name of the first CMS installed in the cluster.

Before You Begin

To perform this procedure, the account you use must be delegated the Exchange View-Only Administrator role. For more information about permissions, delegating roles, and the rights that are required to administer Exchange 2007, see Permission Considerations.

Procedure

To use ADSI Edit to determine the first CMS installed in a SCC

  1. Open the ADSI Edit snap-in (ADSIEdit.msc).

  2. In the ADSI Edit snap-in, expand Configuration [domainControllerName.domain.com], expand CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com, expand CN=Services, expand CN=Microsoft Exchange, expand CN=OrgName, expand CN=Administrative Groups, expand CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT), and then expand CN=Servers.

  3. Right-click CN=CMSName, and select Properties.

  4. Scroll down and locate the msExchResponsibleMTAServer attribute. The value is a distinguished name, and it will begin with CN=Microsoft MTA,CN=CMSName, where CMSName is the name of the first CMS installed in the cluster.
