This section provides information that will help you manage the Transport Rules agent in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 by using commands in the Exchange Management Shell.
Many organizations today are required by law, regulatory requirements, or company policy to apply messaging policies to limit the interaction between recipients and senders, both inside and outside the organization. The Transport Rules agent in Exchange 2007 enables you to apply messaging policies to e-mail messages that flow through an Exchange 2007 organization.
On computers that have the Hub Transport server role installed, Exchange Server uses the Active Directory directory service to apply a consistent messaging policy configuration across the organization. Each Hub Transport server queries Active Directory for each message that the server encounters. This enables e-mail administrators to set policies across the organization and to implement them as soon as replication occurs.
On computers that have the Edge Transport server role installed, Exchange 2007 lets you configure transport rules that can act on e-mail messages before they enter the internal Exchange organization. By acting on messages as close to the Internet as possible, Microsoft Exchange helps reduce the cost associated with unwanted messages, reduces the risk of harmful messages entering the organization, and enables you to apply specific transport rules to messages that enter or leave the organization that may not be required internally to the Exchange organization. Each Edge Transport server contains its own transport rule configuration that is stored locally in Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM).
The following Exchange Management Shell commands let you add, change, remove, enable, or disable transport rules that are used by the Transport Rules agent on a Hub Transport server or an Edge Transport server:
