Associate Archiving Server with Front End Servers

Topic Last Modified: 2009-04-24

After you have activated Archiving Server, you must associate it with each Front End Server whose traffic you want to archive on the Archiving Server.

Note

Perform the following procedure on each Front End Server whose traffic you want to archive. This procedure requires the Office Communications Server administrative tools. For details about how to install these tools, see Installing Administrative Tools in the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Technical Reference documentation.

To associate a Front End Server with the Archiving Server

  1. Log on as a member of the RTCUniversalUserAdmins group to a server that has the Office Communications Server administrative tools installed and that is located in the same forest as the Archiving Server.

  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, and then click Office Communications Server 2007 R2.

  3. In the scope pane, expand the Forest node, and then do one of the following:

    • If you want to archive a Front End Server that is part of an Enterprise pool, expand Enterprise pools.
    • If you want to archive a Standard Edition server, expand Standard Edition Servers.
  4. Do one of the following:

    • For an Enterprise pool, right-click the pool that contains the Front End Server that you want to archive, point to Properties, and then click Front End Properties.
    • For a Standard Edition server, right-click the name of the pool that contains the Standard Edition server that you want to archive, right-click the server name, point to Properties, and then click Front End Properties.
  5. Click the Archiving tab.

  6. To enable archiving, select the Activate IM content archiving check box.

  7. (Optional) If your organization requires archiving for regulatory compliance, enable archiving in critical mode by selecting the Shut down server if archiving fails (including message encryption failure) check box.

    Note

When you select this option, Office Communications Server will shut down if an instant message cannot be archived or encrypted.

  8. On the Archiving tab, in the Office Communications Server list, click the name of the Front End Server, and then click Associate.

  9. In the Associate Back-End Server box, select the Archiving Server to associate with this Front End Server, and then click OK.

  10. When you are finished, click OK.

    Note

When you change the archiving settings for a pool, the changes will take some time to propagate throughout the pool.

  11. If you want to associate this Archiving Server with each Front End Server in an Enterprise pool, be sure to repeat this procedure for each Front End Server.
