Q: When will the conflicts between the firewall of Windows Live One Care be reconciled with Wndows Defender so that both can properly be used in Windows Vista?
A: There should not be any conflicts between the OneCare firewall and Defender as Defender doesn't have firewall in it.
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: When will the conflicts between the firewall of Windows Live One Care be reconciled with Wndows Defender so that both can properly be used in Windows Vista?
A: Moreover, when you have onecare, Defender is disabled, so you ideally don't need defender.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I see that you can back up photos with OneCare to some web space provided by OneCare, but what about important documents, music, and email?
A: In this version, we will only be supporting online photo backup. However, we hope to expand this to additional document types in upcoming versions
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Will the ability to add files and folders to backup be added back into 2.0?
A: I assume you're referring to the fact that this was a feature in v1.6 and before but was removed in v2. I'm actually in the middle of a debate with the backup team trying to convince them that removing this is wrong for the customer, but they feel strongly that in the end it will cause too much confusion for our target customer. What scenarios do you find it valuable (read: give me ammo!!!)
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Regardless of the version of OC, the alerts never fade away.
A: Which alerts?
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: If I have CC cleaner (crap cleaner) installed will that keep WLOC 2 beta from removing uneccessary files? That's the only thing that fails during tune up.
A: Does the tune-up succeed if you disable/uninstall CC cleaner? If so, could you file a bug (https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US)?
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: After every AV scan I am notified that there are 26 viruses (the number never changes) it is unable to resolve. I believe this has been bugged some time ago. When will this be resolved?
A: Hi Phil - does it note that the viruses had a "Quarantine Failed"?
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Regardless of the version of OC, the alerts never fade away. 2nd time :)
A: Which alerts?
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Are you going to put a registry cleaner in with the cleanup?
A: At this time we do not have plans to add a registry cleaner to OneCare.
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Why is the AV/spy Scan so Slow ?
A: Hi Mikro - we're going to be updating the preferences to better balance performance and safety. This should reduce the time it takes to scan your system.
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: .net frameworks will not update to new version v 2.0.50727 which does not allow one care to work corectly
A: This seems like a bug you are encountering, can you please file a bug on https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US)?
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Will Onecare be able to sync with skydrive.live.com or will the backup feature remain separate?
A: It will be separate, but based on the same technology. skydrive only gives you 500MB, which is great for online storage, but not really enough to be an effective backup medium. Our solution will be much larger and geared for backup.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: i am wondering if the scan is working?
A: Which scan?
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Why is Tune-up not working ???
A: Can you provide additional information on exactly what is failing in Tune-up?
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: .net frameworks will not update to new version v 2.0.50727 which does not allow one care to work corectly
A: It is possible that the .Net upgrade failed and left you in a bad state, you might want to try uninstalling and reinstalling 2.0.
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Why doesn't Av/spy scan scan all files? in support log reports files skipped
A: In some cases, files can not be scanned because they are not actual files but intercepted nevertheless. We're also looking to clean up the log file so we don't report these eroneous errors.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: You should allow the OneCare circle manager to take control of a remote computer on the same network in case that computer runs into an issue.
A: Feel free to open a suggestion bug on this (https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US)
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Is Windows Defender included in One Care, thus you don't need to have Windows Defender installed?
A: OneCare is a superset of Windows Defender. Defender is antispyware, whereas OneCare is antimalware (viruses plus spyware). Both use the same underlying engine. If you have OneCare you do not need Defender (we protect against the same + more)
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I was disappointed with the activation process - it caused all 3 or my pc's to hang. I left one in the hung state to see if it would sort out the problem and it was still "not responding" 14 hours later.
A: Please collect the logs by running OneCareSupport.exe from the onecare installation folder and file a bug in https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US. That would help us diagnose what the issue is.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Is it finally possible to activate Onecare perpetual beta for French tester ?
A: It should be. Have you had problems in the past?
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Why doesn't OneCare provide for "system" backup to avoid using to apps?
A: Full system backup is something we're looking at for future versions.
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I have not stumbled upon a way to do manual scans with beta 2.0, since no performance plus screen is apparently available. As a result, I notice that NO tuneups or scans have been done since I installed it with Vista back in July, but it reports that it
A: Hi Willy1 - try opening the OneCare dialog and manually commencing a scan via that section.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: yeah.WHY tune-up is not working?
A: Could you post a follow-up question with the details on what is not working (i.e. defrag, file clean-up, etc.)?
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: All alerts, I have open a problem and reported it. I have to manually close all of them! :)
A: Sorry, I'm still not clear on what the issue is.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: for me removing files & defrag in Tune-up reporting unknown errors
A: Could you file a bug on this (https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US) ?
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: On my home network the "You’re now connected to a network in a home or work zone." alert flips constantly between Private (Safe) and Public (Not Safe). It compounds the alerts not fading away problem.
A: Hi Matthew, There was a known bug causing this problem, this has hence been fixed and you shouldn't see it in the refresh we are sending out very soon.
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I have TweakVista installed, when I run the program, the program locks up. If I add it to the exception list the program works again. Should this be something that I should bug?
A: Hi JoeM, yes please file a bug on this at https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US. We will investigate and fix it.
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I am getting a spike in CPU usage apparently because of Defender?
A: CPU spikes may be related to us scanning your MBR. We have a new engine release scheduled for this Friday which should address the general CPU spike.
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Why can't you change the settings of another computer remotely? Can you do this for a remote computer outside of your active lan connection as well, mainly through the web. Would be great for college students, whose parents have to fix something.
A: This is something that we are looking to add in our future version, for this version remote control capabilities are only limited to the same LAN scenario's. Which is primarily within the home.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Why doesn't WLOC give me the choice of which features I want to use or not use, i.e., the Backup is braindead and I don't wnat to use it, but if I dont the flag will go red.
A: Many of the OneCare features can be disabled via the OneCare settings dialog (i.e. backup). Some features we do not provide the ability to disable, as we believe those are necessary to keep your computer secure or for OneCare to operate correctly
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Re: Q4 and the answer that it will cause too much confusion with the "target" customer - just who the heck IS the target customer anyway if not the usual/average user who would like to choose what to back up and what not to?
A: The target customer for OneCare is computer users that don't want to be computer experts. Folks that just want to surf the web and check email without knowing the ins and outs of PC Management. The theory is that folks are better off following our recommendations on what to back up than they are designing their own custom backup plans which are error prone if you're a PC novice. (Note: I agree with target customer and solving their problem. I disagree with the application of that principle to the removal of the folder inclusion feature in backup.) Help give me ammo!
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: When I remove OC1.6 and install the 2.0 beta, when I click on the quarantine button it says it has an error and closes. Is this a known issue?
A: This seems like a bug to me JoeM, please file a bug at https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Q#4: files and data created by other programs which do not fall into the default categories. Webshots data comes to mind, having .wbz file extensions.
A: Good ammo, thanks! What does .wbz come from and why would you want to back it up?
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Suggestion, overall messaging in Onecare should be improved e.g. if Defender is off in Vista and on in OneCare seems as though that should be made apparent, there are a variety of other poor messaging issues!
A: BB3, Defender is turned Off by OneCare. OneCare doesn't need Defender as it has builtin AntiSpyware and in addition Antivirus, Firewall and other goodies.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Scott...removing Crap Cleaner from my system and still tune up fails on removing unecessary files. During tune up, the green check mark shows up at this step but the rport shows it failed. The rest of tune up runs fine.
A: Okay, could you file a bug on this? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Q#4: files and data created by other programs which do not fall into the default categories. Webshots data comes to mind, having .wbz file extensions.
A: Also, if we added this under an existing OneCare category (like financial data) and .wbz files were automatically picked up would that suffice?
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Thanks, Vikram. I am pleased that the connection with Windows Mobile Device Center I can connect my phone, this did not work in 1.5. Can you add a FireWall rule for WMDC in addition to ActiveSync?
A: Sure, please file a bug at https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US so that we don't loose the request.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Will there be some intergration between the wireless detection in Vista and in OneCare? Home,Work,Public?
A: Currently, there are no plans to integrate Wireless detection and into OneCare
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Seems that virus scan should be eliminated from "tune up" if infact Onecare provides real time protection?
A: Tune-up or On-Demand scans can actually catch things which the real-time protection can not. In addition, On-Demand scans provide additional technology which would not make sense to run in real time.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Defrag in Tune-up or in vista in general skips my second Hard drive for some reason . amoung the errors defrag never defrags my second drive.
A: Thanks for reporting. Sounds like a bug - have you submitted a bug report? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Are any new features going to be added to 2.0 before the final release?
A: No, the current build you are running is "feature complete" although there will be bug fixes before release.
rajesh (Expert):
Q: Is there an ETA on the final version of Onecare 2.0 as I have found it to be very stable?
A: No, we are working on it. We will ship it as soon as it ready
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Hi Scott: well, there is no way to do that. no manual scan option, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled 2.0
A: For items you want to manually scan, Right Mouse Click on it and select "Scan for Viruses".
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Why no Windows XP x64 support?
A: After evaluating the needs of the user base, there wasn't a compelling reason to support this platform
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Is there an ETA on the final version of Onecare 2.0 as I have found it to be very stable?
A: Good to know that the beta is stable for you. The ship will be announced soon as soon as it is finalized.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: The Monthly report look weekly for the the 2.0 can you clairify this on when a report is geberated ?
A: It is a Monthly Report normally, but we turned up the frequency to weekly during the beta to increase eyeballs on it to get the feedback. What do you think of it? Helpful? Annoying? Meh?
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: in my "onecare circle" there is one PC that has an option to manage my wireless settings and it is not the hub PC, but there is no wireless router on my network and no wireless card in any of my PC's. Why does it continue to provide this option?
A: Hi Tom, can you point out where you see windows defender? Please file a bug on ttp://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US. Note that what we can do with Windows Defender is limited as it is part of Windows and doesn't ship as part of OneCare.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Q[4]A customer of mine backs up their quckbooks data there is no reason to backup data from all over the computer. Another backsup PDF files and Word files, Privite Invistigator, there's no need for OneCare to backup PDF files from AOL, and other programs
A: Good good...keep it coming
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Rephrased…I am running Vista x64, and after every AV scan I am notified that there are 26 viruses (the number never changes) it is unable to resolve, i.e.”Quarantine Failed”. I believe this has been bugged some time ago. When will this be resolved?
A: Hi Phil - We're updating the dialogs to give better information. In the meantime, you can reference the support log and search on PST or DBX. These will indicate the file (or mail container) where the infection is discovered but could not be removed. In these cases, these are files attached to mail which we could not clean (thus quarantine failed).
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: "It should be. Have you had problems in the past?" Never worked, we told me it was a known issue few month ago in the NG
A: Shoot an email to ocinvite@microsoft.com - we'll get you hooked up.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: A good example of an alert is one stating that you are now connected to a secured network. :)
A: Ah yes - thanks for reporting. This is a known bug that should be fixed in this week's update
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Why are there no plans for a registry cleaner within OneCare? You provide a registry cleaner as part of the safety scanner, why can't it be included with OneCare?
A: It's something that we are constantly evaulating and will be considered for the next version
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Q#4: Webshots is a photo wallpaper program and I have accumulated about 2,000 wallpapers over the last few years.
A: Good stuff - thanks!
rajesh (Expert):
Q: I find the default setting of sharing printers irritaing - I have to switch it off computer by computer, and it is too late by the time I get round to it - every computer in the circle has to acknowledge popup messages. Why not hub centralize this option?
A: the default is enable printer sharing. Most of the users seem to like this option. Why are you trying to turn it off?
Terrence (Expert):
Q: If I have XP and Vista in dual boot, and I have one care on both, is that considered two Copies of one care, since you can only be running one OS at a time, on the same computer, I would think it should be only 1 copy,
A: This would be considered two computers to us. The license is per OS, not per machine.
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I find the default setting of sharing printers irritaing - I have to switch it off computer by computer, and it is too late by the time I get round to it - every computer in the circle has to acknowledge popup messages. Why not hub centralize this option?
A: Hi OneCarer, can you explain how you want the control to be? We have changed our default behaviour in the refresh you are going to see soon, now we do not install the printer on the client machine until a user approves the installation. Note that the printer sharing feature is not a hub centralized feature, you can share printers from any pc to any other pc in the circle weather or not it is a hub.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Regarding the XP 64bit support....Is it that much harder to add support when it is already supported for Vista and XP 32bit?
A: Yes, supporting XP x64 would be adding a completely new platform (i.e. it would be a substantial effort)
rajesh (Expert):
Q: WHY is my tune-up is not working?..the tune-up checklist is telling me that my remove unnecessary files the task could not be performed because of a unkknown problem same with the defragment the hard drive..
A: What is the OS? It may be the case that you may be running out of space as well
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Right now, I can view/monitor the status of remote PC's from my OneCare hub. Why not prove a method for me to fix reported problems too (i.e. install missing windows updates, start a backup up, or deactivate the feature, etc.)?
A: Currently there are a limited set of actions that we can take remotely. We are actively investigating expanding this list in future.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Monthly report I liked the first 2.0 build because the the graphics/charts were up front and not hidden under details
A: Yeah, I saw your comment on the forums too but didn't have time to reply yet Mikro. The scoop here is that there is only so much real estate in MR, and lots of data/charts to present. The way we tackled this was by highlighting a different section each report. One month backup is in the spotlight, next month protection, etc. Note that for the other sections, you can still get the expanded info including charts by clicking on the 'details' link for each section.
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: how do we register multiple computers during the beta
A: As long as you sign in from every computer using the same liveid. they all belong to the same circle.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Option request, is it possible to set a third party DEFRAG program within OC settings? 8-|
A: No, we currently do not provide this functionality
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: (re-submitting) in my "onecare circle" there is one PC that has an option to manage my wireless settings and it is not the hub PC, but there is no wireless router on my network and no wireless card in any of my PC's. Why does it continue to provide this op
A: Hi JAber, wow! this clearly seems like a bug. Can you please file a bug at https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US. Please note that even though you are not connected wirelessly, if you are connected to a router that has the wireless capability and it is unsecure, we pop up the message.
rajesh (Expert):
Q: Is there anyway to turn off the Defrag in OC, since vista is already doing a defrag by default, there is no need to repeat it and have the hard drive do more work then needed.
A: No there is no option to turn off defrag. I understand where you are coming from.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Why is it when windows updates a browser or a program updates, it has to ask the user to allow it to the web or not? If you already granted that company access why should it ask again?
A: Are you referring to the OneCare firewall allowing programs? If so, we treat each executible as a separate item to ensure undesired programs do not get through
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Is there anyway to turn off the Defrag in OC, since vista is already doing a defrag by default, there is no need to repeat it and have the hard drive do more work then needed.
A: No way to turn it off, but it won't interfere with anything. If Vista defrag is running ours doesn't start as well, and if the disk is already defragged...well ours will run in just a few seconds! Never hurts to have multiple defrag attempts.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Q#22:No because that's one program. What about others which don't get backed up because they are an unusual file type or are stored in an unexpected location?
A: Yep, good argument
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Why does OC2.0 leave a Virtual Network Device for backups? Is that actually where the backups are stored?
A: Sorry I don't know the answer to this! Our backup PM wasn't able to attend today and he'd normally know. Have you posted this question in the forums? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Q57 - "Hi OneCarer, can you explain how you want the control to be?" - Sure, the hub should have more control on which PC's can have sharing turned on. Sure, share the PC's from each PC, just centralize the ability to turn this feature on/off.
A: Please file a request at https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US. We have considered this, but didn't add it for lack of time, if there is sufficient interest, i am sure we can add this functionality.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Why can't OneCare be part of the OS, like IE, or be part of Windows Home Server?
A: To ensure we are entering the field on a fair playing field with our competitors, we are currently providing a OneCare as a standalone product apart from other Microsoft offerings
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Re: q25/answer... some ammo: Having the settings/options available for those who know or can learn to use them is not a hazard if the default is set for the usual, casual, novice user.. :)
A: I agree, and thanks for the feedback. so would you be less likely to use OneCare backup if we removed the ability to add files/folders?
rajesh (Expert):
Q: my os is vista ultimate 32 bit
A: okay. How much disk space do you have?
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Hey is there going to be a role with Wloc in the future for the xbox360 ?
A: Currently, we are not planning on adding the Xbox 360 as a OneCare platform
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I have noticed a threefold increase in elapsed time in starting Vista, is OC doing something I am unaware of? |-)
A: Is this a threefold increase from prior use of OC 1.6 or just with OC installed?
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Is onecare going to have a UI refresh like the others live products ?
A: Not at this time. Why, don't you think our UI is sexy? :)
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Will you be able to buy licence packs, like Symantec offers? They offer the more licences a user wants the cheaper it gets for each pc.
A: Yep. Stay tuned. :)
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: [fit-and-finish issue] I use 'large fonts' in Vista and this sometimes results in text overlapping and borders getting cut off
A: Can you file a bug on this? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
rajesh (Expert):
Q: Is there any plans to offer OneCare as an Ultimate Extra for Vista users?
A: No plans.
VikramK [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Is there any plans to offer OneCare as an Ultimate Extra for Vista users?
A: There are no such current plans.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Is there a way to leave a onecare circle? (i.e take a PC out of a circle and make it standalone again)?
A: You can remove it from being a hub PC, but in order to remove it from a circle you need to uninstall and then reinstall, activating with a different Live ID
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: He is, but it coud be more "Vista like" :P
A: Thanks for the feedback. :)
rajesh (Expert):
Q: why is there not a way to disable the firewall or other functions of OneCare from the Tray icon?
A: We do not want people to turn off firewall or other functions, so putting it in the tray icon would not help.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: The ability to exclude folders from tune up and backup is a necessity for me. Why can't we have this feature?
A: In what scenarios do you need this feature?
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Ok How about using currently named Sky Drive as a online bakup ?
A: We are always evaluating the integration of additional Microsoft technologies. We are looking into SkyDrive for future versions.
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: The threefold increase occurred after install of OC 2.0 beta. 8-|
A: We did some preliminary tests and discovered that our incremental impact to boot time has been relatively nominal. We also noticed that the first boot after install takes a bit longer then subsequent boots. Other then that, our tests have not revealed any abnormal boot time impact. Are you using Vista, Vista 64 or XP?
rajesh (Expert):
Q: 2000 gb,5 HARD DRIVE
A: It looks like there may be a conflict with the vista defrag. Could you file a bug.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Is there any plans to create a Vista gadget? Maybe to show alerts, and show other info. Like current viruses spreading, etc.?
A: Currently, there are no plans for this. However, it's a great suggestion--could you file a bug on this? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: AS far as i know oncecare does not scan outgoing emails or incoming files from messengers. Will there be support for this?
A: Supporting specific messenger clients can be tricky and not always work. What we do know if that in order to view any attachments, the file in mail is saved to disk before it is executed. In all cases, we will scan the file and either deny or allow access based on safety.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: will OC beta tester of 2.0 get a discount like previous beta testers?
A: Yep. :) Note that those that file bugs get a deeper discount. :)
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: What's the difference between WLOC web security scan and any versions of Windows Live One Care
A: OneCare provides ongoing protection, whereas the web scanner is on demand
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I highly suspect the increase is associated with perimeter checking of all computers connected to the hub. 8-|
A: Hmm... shouldn't be the case... if you believe this is a bug, I would encourage you to post it to https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
rajesh (Expert):
Q: i already did that, and someone told me that i should defrag manualy,
A: Sorry that you are going through this. Sounds like it did not work after you ran the manual defrag right?
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I am using 32 bit VISTA Ultimate 8-|
A: oh... okay. I did see a speed problem for Vista x64. How is your memory consumption? Are you seeing a lot less memory available as well?
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Are there plans to improve the OneCare circle management functions (remove from circle, join new circle). It seems that if you change your mind or reconfigure after installation, you are stuck.
A: We'll certainly improve in future versions, and this is high on our list of requested improvements. For now, though, the workaround is to uninstall and reinstall with a new Live ID (painful, annoying, but not quite stuck)
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: What about the UI? Windows Live Wave 2, no?
A: No :)
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Q#82: External drives.
A: Why would you not want to scan external drives?
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I installed OC 2.0 and tested it on dialup, I noticed that the def files take 30-60minutes to dowload, when I do a manual update. Will there be any indicator to these user that a file is being download, and time to finish?
A: Our downloads are background so there's usually not a % indicator or time to finish. We also piggy back on BITS and this is currently not a supported feature.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Will Microsoft be adding a security test to their website? So somebody could test how well their computer is protected, Like open port testing, firewall strength, Or have the open port test part of one care,
A: Our current web offer is located at: https://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm For now, we are not planning on adding any additional functionality
Terrence (Expert):
Q: Is there any way or will there be any way to find out how many licences I have used and what computers they are linked to? Also maybe an easy way to transfer the licence to another computer.
A: There is in the beta. The number of PCs you have used shows up in your OneCare circle.
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Q#83: Could One Care somehow flag the location of infected e-mail rather than just leave the user with "quarantine failed" after a scan?
A: Yep... we're doing this in the next Beta Refresh. New UI with the necessary information to tell the user what, where and how to fix it.
rajesh (Expert):
Q: how effective is the OC defrag? Any comparison to Diskeeper?
A: Diskkeper is fully functional defrag and imo it is better than OC defrag. OC is a comprehensive product with defrag one part of it, so we are comfortable with the functionality.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Currently I use WLMessenger. I was wounder if OC allows other programs like messenger to show to their contact's the status of OneCare. I have alot of customers, and this would make it easier to see if they are having issues.
A: This is a good suggestion--can you file a bug? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
rajesh (Expert):
Q: the manual defrag and disk clean-up is working fine.but not with the tune-up.. :(
A: Please go to https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US and file a bug. Sorry.
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: How can I report the threefold increase in startup time for Vista? I am more than happy to file the appropriate startup files once you let me know what to do. 8-|
A: Sure... please run the support tool located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\OneCareSupport.exe located in then mail it to wloc@live.com.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Are there plans to improve the OneCare circle management functions (remove from circle, join new circle). It seems that if you change your mind or reconfigure after installation, you are stuck.
A: Actually - there *is* a way to do this. From the hub PC, you can kick a remote PC out of the circle. At that time the remote PC would go into expired mode. At this point you could activate that PC again to a different circle. Again not an optimal experience (and you can't kick out the hub PC), but this is easier than uninstall/reinstall
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Looks like in chat here the Issues in Tune-up look like the most commented about how soon will these issues be fixed ?
A: For all of issues you're seeing, please file a bug https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US and we will investigate before the final version ships
Terrence (Expert):
Q: Right now, I have a OneCare circle of about 15 computers (and rising). Will you continue to support this beyond the BETA, or will you impose the advertised, but limiting restrictions of 3 computers per circle (I don't see why you should mind!). (H)
A: If you have over 3 PCs, you are breaking the terms of your license. We do not officially support this in Beta, and you should not expect this functionality to exist later.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: What about integrating Windows Live OneCare with other Windows Live services/applications? Any future plans?
A: Which ones would you like to see?
Terrence (Expert):
Q: In order to get the beta test discount, do you have to buy the product from microsoft? How will you know if we were a beta tester?
A: Yes, to obtain the beta discount, you have to buy directly from Microsoft.
rajesh (Expert):
Q: If I turn off "notify me when my Firewall Protection Level changes", OneCare turns yellow. Is there anyway to prevent this. I don't need to be notified so much, when I am on wireless. Vista controls my Public,Home status
A: Can you confirm where you see this setting?
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Do users have to pay for the new update? Like Norton offers a new update yearly, but you have to pay more to get it.
A: No, as long as your OneCare subscription is current, you will receive all updates to the product (including this release)
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: This is just for information purposes. I've been runnning WLOC 2 beta on a fully updated XP PRO machine and aside from Removing Unecessary Files failing in Tune UP (submitted bug report already) everything else runs fine. Can I say good job so far? :D
A: Yes you can. thanks very much for the comments, and glad things are working for you. As for the defrag failing, this is a problem we're working on for a future update.
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Q#90 Because backup is performed after the malware scan so the external should be clean and because scanning all of those zip files takes forever.
A: For AV scans, you can exclude the backup location... is this what you're asking?
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q:Q: [107], I will file a bug, will a video help?
A: Sure, more data the better!
rajesh (Expert):
Q: friends, any body can help me about my onecare firewall. it is not turning on. i tried in different ways, but it didn't turned on.
A: What error are you getting?
Terrence (Expert):
Q: how do I set up a subscription for the OC beta 2.0? the website is linking me to the current release version of the product.
A: There is no need to subscribe to the OC Beta. You can try all the features of OneCare for free during the beta.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I asked about the web scan because it has features we don't see in wloc program
A: Correct. We are always looking at adding additional functionality to the client as we analyze the needs of our user base. Currently, we have not found enough compelling reasons to bring the functionaltiy of the website into the client
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Re: Q25 answer: Whether I would be less likely to us OC backup if the ability to add files/folders is removed - no, I would still use it, but the less functionality and options the OC backup has, the more the need for other additional backup methods.
A: Ok, thanks for the feedback.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: What are you doing to switch users over from symantec to OneCare? Basic customers get confused one which companies software to take, especially if they do not understand what a computer really does.
A: We are constantly working on our messaging to remove the confusion between us and our competitors. Unfortunately, our competitors often come pre-installed on new computers so it makes our job even harder :)
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: I have this setup with dual boot, Vista and XP, I don’t know if this helps, but the defrag fails on my sata drives, running raid0 (Vista) It works on XP, XP is on a single sata drive, (same computer)
A: Thanks for the feedback. Can you file a bug with your support logs? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Is Onecare 2.0 beta going to stop working after the beta ?
A: Yes. :) You will get a discount to purchase OneCare in our production environment, though
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Q#105. No, the defrag is what I meant.
A: So you'd like to defrag the drive but exclude certain folders or files from being defragmented? I've not heard of that request, but it makes sense. If you'd like to submit formal feedback, please go to https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Terrence (Expert):
Q: i was sent an invitation for the wifi security experience and have a product key, but OC beta 2.0 tells me i need to set up a subscriction and won't let me enter the product key
A: Can you give more details of your problem? At what point are you getting stuck from entering your product key?
rajesh (Expert):
Q: Re: Q59/answer... I get that error about not being able to remove unnecessary files and there is no apparent reason, it is checked to do so, lots of space. memory, etc... It appears to be a common problem according to the NGs etc..
A: Please file a bug at https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: how about a tool to defrag the registry? ;)
A: At this time we do not have plans to add a registry cleaner to OneCare.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: how about adding up a like a registry cleaner or something to clean the registry?
A: At this time we do not have plans to add a registry cleaner to OneCare.
evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: is this chat transcript going to be avaiable ?
A: Yep. You can find this chat's transcript, along with chat#1, at https://connect.microsoft.com/site/sitehome.aspx?SiteID=168
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: Will you be creating a version of OneCare for SBS and Windows Server?
A: We are looking into it. Would that be of interest to you?
rajesh (Expert):
Q: The MSFSCV is generating alot of repeated errors in Windows event viewer in vista what's that about and is it a known issue?
A: Are you getting this error OneCare Firewall failed while executing the following method: DeleteSingleInstance. Error Code: 0x80070490, Error Message: Element not found.
Luke Abrams[OneCare] (Moderator):
Q: That's great! But you might re-read what I said...mt defrqag works fine. :P
A: Oh cool!
Terrence (Expert):
Q: If OC expires, and a few days later I get a new key and enter it into account.live, will all the OCs installed automatically be updated?
A: As long as you do this within a few days of your actual experation, all your OC clients will have this updated information. If you wait too long, you may need to relogin using your Live ID credentials.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: You should add the ability for friends to send you a statistic like list of what was on there pc and such, so you know how to better protect it. Such as a monthly report that is reported to the Manager of OneCare Circle. Send it through live msg.
A: Good suggestion! Can you open a bug? https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Q122: Do you offer a competive list for users that are advanced, so they can see what features you have and what the others have?
A: We don't have a list we publish, however, we do have a page that outlines OneCare functionality: https://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/prodinfo/default.htm
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Q#117: I've filed that request on Connect since 1.0.
A: Hmm... exclude by file/folder for defrag is unlikely a highly requested feature. I can understand why you'd want it.
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Thank you for the invitation. This has been informative.
A: glad to be of help... hope to see you next time.
rajesh (Expert):
Q: edit: The MSFWSCV is generating alot of repeated errors in Windows event viewer in vista what's that about and is it a known issue?
A: If you are seeing this error "OneCare Firewall failed while executing the following method: DeleteSingleInstance. Error Code: 0x80070490, Error Message: Element not found." This is a known issue. It is actually a false error message and we are fixing it.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: when will we start seeing media advertising? No one in my extended family has ever heard of OneCare.
A: Thanks for the feedback. We are always looking for new/improved advertising opportunities. However, hopefully your word of mouth advertising helping!
rajesh (Expert):
Q:Q: [131], OneCare Firewall failed while executing the following method: DeleteSingleInstance. Error Code: 0x80070490, Error Message: Element not found. I get this alot what does it mean?
A: This is an incorrect error message. We are fixing it. Pls ignore it.
rajesh (Expert):
Q: Re: Q98 answer: When you said a removed PC from the circle - "At that time the remote PC would go into expired mode" - I hope you did not mean that the subscription would go into expired mode - please clarify!
A: Correct--just the remote PC will go into the expired mode.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: What is the objection to (a) catering to business customers and (b) supporting OneCare circles larger than 3?
A: Microsoft is addressing this market with our ForeFront product suite (https://www.microsoft.com/forefront/default.mspx)
Terrence (Expert):
Q: when i open up onecare and click the activate button as instructed in the email i recieved, OC will link me to the website for the release version of OC and ask me to set up a subscription
A: You should be directed to this URL. https://get.live.com/onecare/perpetualclientb. If you are not getting to this page, and are sure you have the beta installed (which you can tell by looking to see if you see "pre-release" in the title bar), then it might be a bug.
rajesh (Expert):
Q: is there a volume license or way to legally install multiple OC?
A: Our lincesing today supports OC install on upto 3 computers.
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Q#137: I consider a drive a folder :)
A: oh... so exclude a drive from defrag... i c now. I'll discuss with the PM.
rajesh (Expert):
Q: Will there we an option for refering a friend. I have moved alot of people over to OC. Giving users point, like Xbox points could be a nice incentive.
A: It is a great suggestion. Thank you for the feedback. :)
Terrence (Expert):
Q: Is there a limit to how many times you can reinstall OneCare? I know Norton has this. I find if very difficult if your computer crashes and you have to reinstall, but you have to rebuy because your licence has been fully used. Should check online.
A: so long as you keep under your 3 PC limit, you should have no problem uninstalling and reinstalling. In V2, you should be able to determine how many PCs you have in your subscription by looking at your oneCare circle.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Re: Q 128 - I would buy it for all our Business servers - and so would others!
A: Great. It's possible forefront might be a better solution for you (https://www.microsoft.com/forefront/default.mspx)
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Any word on planned features of OnceCare 3.0
A: Nothing official :)
rajesh (Expert):
Q: What about Windows Live Onecare for Windows Home Server?
A: We're evaluating this platform for a future release.
Terrence (Expert):
Q: I have had OC since it first came out, I just renewed my subscription. Being part of all OC betas, will I receive some kind of extended period or something other beneficial? 8-|
A: we normally offer a special rate for our beta participants, but do not have any special offers to announce at this time.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Will future builds reduce the number of "normal" systray popups (e.g. "WLOC is up to date") or allow this to be selectively disabled? Also, will there be efforts to limit the system resources req'd for WLOC? This would make your suite very competitive.
A: For V2, we are not making any changes in these areas. However, feel free to file a suggestion bug (https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US)
Terrence (Expert):
Q: Will there be an option to buy a licence for more then 1 year. Like 2-3 years?
A: We are evualating this as an option, but have no news to announce about this at this time.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I bought a subscription for 1.6. Will that carry over to the 2.0 or will I have to buy the 2.0
A: As long as your subscription is current, you will receive all product updates
Terrence (Expert):
Q: I would be easier when I activate OC if I could enter the key right in the UI instead of going to the website.
A: thanks for the suggestion.
rajesh (Expert):
Q: what is a hub pc?
A: You can view the status of all computerss in your OneCare circle from a single location--the hub pc. Any PC in your circle can be assigned as the hub PC--all you have to do is go to the OneCare circle view (by clicking the link on the left-hand bar) and signing in with your Live ID.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: There's a registry cleaner in the security web scan how come no registry scan in wloc 2.0
A: Currently, there are no plans to bring this functionality to the OneCare client
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I have had occurrences of the automatic network detect feature detecting a "new" network when roaming to another AP in my WDS WLAN. It will identify it as "ssid 2" and ask if it is home/work or public, and even if I answer "home" it sets it to public.
A: Could you file a bug on this? (https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US)
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: would it be possible to set OC to use idle processing power to run a scan in the background without having to schedule a scan, sort of a perpetual scan. hopefully eliminating the need to open the program manually. i think most consumers would like this
A: in other words, throttling the scan to match the available CPU %? I believe that IS something we're looking to do. Better use of CPU cycles as well as a better user experience.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: How will I update the 2.0 with update. My subscription will go pass 2.0 beta
A: Your client will automatically update when 2.0 is released
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: What are the feature for the following Windows Live OneCare 3.0?
A: We haven't released any official information on this yet...:)
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: What is OneCare doing to stop a bios attack, such as someone putting a virus from a boot of a cd or scan disk?
A: For Master Boot Records, or MBRs, we have scan technology which can detect and scan those types of threats. These are done automatically during disk mount, inserting a USB drive, or dropping a CD into the tray.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: what are some of the features can we expect in the next beta release?
A: Only bug fix caliber changes will be coming between now and release. The build you have now is "feature complete"
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: My wife is concerned about the performance impact of Onecare on her computer, how much of an impact on performance does Onecare actually cause?
A: We strive to have OneCare provide a very minimal impact on machine performance. If you have a specific example of a performance issue, please file a bug at: https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: What about the ability to add PC's on different networks or across the internet to the Onecare Circle?
A: I believe we are looking at allowing the add of PCs from different subnets, but since OneCare targets home users, expect some limitations to maintain security.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Will u guys be adding a extented tune up time, longer than 4 weeks? like 1 month or 2 months?
A: Not in V2, however, feel free to file a suggestion: https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: How often do you update virus definitions for OC?
A: Updates are currently made available daily. We also provide updates in response to virus outbreaks or imminent threats.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Q#161: The FAQ posted in the forum says you will need to uninstall the beta before you can install the production product. Are the FAQs incorrect?
A: No, this is correct
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Do beta users of v. 2.0 have to download OneCare again once it reaches final version or will it be updated through the update system if the user has a subscription?
A: You will have to uninstall the beta and install the production client once it is released
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: how come we can,t scan for virusses in safe mode?
A: Look for our safemodescanner in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Wloc 2.0 License is only for 3 computers is there any plans to increase this there is quite a few people out there with more than 3 computers out there My friends has 6 himself it looks like Nasa Mission control
A: Not currently
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: ok, i love this beta build and all, i know "US" beta testers get discount and so on, what about if i was to recommend this software to lets say my family member or a friend, is there some way to give them a discount?
A: Unfortunately, the discount only applies to beta testers. However, OneCare often goes on sale in various stores (Costco, Best Buy, etc.) which is a good way to get it cheaper
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: As a computer business teaching new computer users, I am concerned about rootkits. Does OC deal with this concern?
A: We currently provide detection for known rootkits. There are, however, certain rootkits which require a clean boot where the RK will not be in memory. We are actually in the process of updating features and functionality to allow users to recover from such situations.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Can you put an option in OC so that it runs with norton internet security compatbile mode or something like it to allow a choice between agents for security
A: It's currently possible to run multiple AV providers, however, it can cause substantial conflicts and performance issues. Unfortunately, there's no real way around these conflicts
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Could there be an option to show what OC is scanning when I start a Virus scan manually? Norton has this and show what it is doing and does not make it appear it is stuck.
A: If you're asking about our scan going to 90% and stopping, we're adding text to better address this and provide users some info as to what's going on.
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: can OC be set up to create a backup of pretty much everything such as the os, the registry, and programs so one can reformat without having to uninstall all of the bloatware included with most oem computers?
A: In V2, OneCare will automatically choose which files to backup and you will not be able to specify additional directories
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: so we are able to scan in safe mode?
A: yes, from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\SafeModeAVScanner.exe
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: RE: Q137 re 117: "exclude by file/folder for defrag is unlikely a highly requested feature" - I strongly disagree - you need to expand the target audience beyond the novice only mentality - if the options are there they *will* be used by many.:)
A: It's a difficult balance for us--we have to make sure OneCare is super easy for novice users while providing the necessary functionaltiy for more advanced users...
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: OC looks like a great product, only saw tune up defrag fail once. This looks like a fix coming?
A: If you have a specific tune up issue, please file a bug to make sure it gets addressed: https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Why can't you allow the OneCare Cirlce Manager to add more than 3 pcs to their circle? I don't like that you cannot add more than 3 pcs to that circle. Ensure that the users have all the required licenses. You can perform an allience with another manager.
A: This is a good suggestion--can you open a suggestion bug? v
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: reworded question: Using OC 2.0 with Vista x-64, I don't have a performance plus screen with which to control the process. Has the performance plus screen been removed?
A: It should still be there. If you're not seeing it anymore, please go to the link and submit a bug: https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: RE: Q: [110]: Windows Home Live, (for a start :P). Protection status, OneCare circles..?
A: Not sure but you can submit the feedback through: https://beta2.onecare.live.com/standard_beta/en-us/feedback.htm?mkt=en-US
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: This is my first MS beta and so far a good experience--definitely adds a human feel to such a massive enterprise. Thanks much, folks... gotta go.
A: No problem, thanks for the feedback!
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: would it be practical to include oncare in a package deal with microsoft os's such as vista or is it something that microsoft is trying to keep seperate. i think it would be a great way to increase market penetration
A: For legal reasons, it would be difficult to do this, but the idea is sound. :)
Scott [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: do x-64 testers get a deeper discount than x-32 testers?
A: No
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Will there be any option to show how many viruses have been found during a virus scan. So I know if I have any before the AV scan finishes.
A: Yes, this is a common feature request which we are looking to expose from the Engine API to the UI layer. Stay tuned. :)
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: I installed 1.6 on the vista machine of a little old 80 yr old lady ..not one problem...cudos to you guys
A: :)
Eddy [OneCare] (Expert):
Q: Which OS is not available for installing OC?
A: We only install on XP, Vista and Vista x64 (v2 beta only).
