How to switch remote desktop connection to high resolution

IT administrators often manage remote servers and virtual machines using the remote desktop protocol/remote desktop services (RDP/RDS). Remote FX in Windows Server 2008 R2 supports display resolutions greater than 16 bit color, however, this is not the default setting. If you need to view the remote machine in higher resolution, here's how.

To switch RDP/RDS to high resolution:

  1. Start / Administrative Tools / Remote Desktop Services / Remote Desktop Host Configuration.
  2. Edit the default configuration (usually named "RDP-TCP").
  3. In the "Client Settings" tab, uncheck "Limit Maximum Color Depth".
  4. Click "Apply", then "OK".

..now all new RDP connections will be able to take advantage of the full color capabilities of the remote machine.
