Introduction

System Center Data Protection Manager (SCDPM) is part of the System Center family. It delivers unified data protection for Windows servers such as SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, Virtualization (Hyper-V) and file servers -- as well as Windows desktops and laptops.

With SCDPM it is possible to backup on the following media:

  • Disk
  • Tape (also Virtual Tape Libraries)
  • Cloud

  • Disaster recovery solutions using the System Recovery Tool (SRT), which provides bare-metal recovery of (virtual) servers and desktops running Windows.

DPM provides protection of the following items:

  • File data from volumes, shares, and folders.
  • Microsoft Exchange Server mailboxes
  • Microsoft SQL Server databases
  • Microsoft SharePoint Servers (including foundation)
  • Microsoft Hyper-V
  • Microsoft workstations (from XP to Windows 7, except home versions)
  • Files and application data on clustered servers.
  • System state and Bare Metal for protected file and application servers (for example domain controllers)

 

 

 

System Requirements

General

System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 is designed to run on a dedicated server. It is not supported to install it on servers when the following roles/products are installed:

  • System Center Operations Manager
  • Exchange Server
  • Cluster Services
  • Remote Desktop Services
  • Directory Services (limited functionality and not recommended)

Installation account

A account with Domain Administrator privileges is not necessary. Only Local Administrator on the SCDPM server are required. SQL sysadmin rights are required when using an remote SQL Server instance.

Software requirements

SCDPM can only be installed on supported 64bit editions of Windows Server operating systems. The following are supported:

  • Windows Server 2008, Standard and Enterprise editions
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2, Standard and Enterprise editions
  • Windows Server 2008 R2, Standard and Enterprise editions
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Standard and Enterprise editions
