Preparing Exchange Server 2016 Coexistence with Exchange 2010

 

Exchange Server 2016 Coexistence

 

Exchange Server 2013 CU10 or Later

Exchange Server 2010 RU11 or Later

will only be able to coexists with the above version mentioned

 

Coexistence of Exchange Server 2016 with legacy versions of Exchange

Exchange 2010 Supported with Update Rollup 11 for Exchange 2010 SP3 or later on all Exchange 2010 servers in the organization, including Edge Transport servers.
Exchange 2013 Supported with Exchange 2013 Cumulative Update 10 or later on all Exchange 2013 servers in the organization, including Edge Transport servers.
Mixed Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013 organization Supported with the following minimum versions of Exchange:

 

  • Update Rollup 11 Exchange 2010 SP3 or later on all Exchange 2010 servers in the organization, including Edge Transport servers.
  • Exchange 2013 Cumulative Update 10 or later on all Exchange 2013 servers in the organization, including Edge Transport servers.

      • At least 30 GB on the drive on which you install Exchange
      • An additional 500 MB of available disk space for each Unified Messaging (UM) language pack that you plan to install
      • 200 MB of available disk space on the system drive
      • A hard disk that stores the message queue database on with at least 500 MB of free space.

Note: Once you install Exchange Server 2016 you cannot install the earlier versions of Exchange

 

As it’s Coexistence environment (Exchange Server 2016 with Exchange 2010).

 

First Prepare your Exchange  Server 2010 with latest RU11

 

After Installation confirm if it has the latest Rollup installed as shown below

Installation Of Exchange Server 2016 RTM

 

Prerequisites :

 

  •  
    •  
      • Active Directory preparation
      • Installation of Windows Server 2012 R2 prerequisites using Windows Powershell (Run as Administrator)
  •  
    •  
      • Mailbox Server Role
      • Edge Transport Server Role

 

Step 1 :  Active Directory preparation

Install Remote Tool Admin Pack using Windows Powershell (Run as Administrator)

Command :  Install-WindowFeature RSAT-ADDS

Step 2 : Installation of Windows Server 2012 R2 prerequisites using Windows Powershell (Run as Administrator)

Mailbox Server Role :

Install-WindowsFeature AS-HTTP-Activation, Desktop-Experience, NET-Framework-45-Features, RPC-over-HTTP-proxy, RSAT-Clustering, RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface, RSAT-Clustering-Mgmt, RSAT-Clustering-PowerShell, Web-Mgmt-Console, WAS-Process-Model, Web-Asp-Net45, Web-Basic-Auth, Web-Client-Auth, Web-Digest-Auth, Web-Dir-Browsing, Web-Dyn-Compression, Web-Http-Errors, Web-Http-Logging, Web-Http-Redirect, Web-Http-Tracing, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console, Web-Metabase, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-Mgmt-Service, Web-Net-Ext45, Web-Request-Monitor, Web-Server, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-Static-Content, Web-Windows-Auth, Web-WMI, Windows-Identity-Foundation -Restart

Planning for Edge Transport Server Role :

Install-WindowsFeature ADLDS

 

Here we are only installing Mailbox Server Role, if you planning for Edge Transport Server Role then you can run the above command

 

Step 3 : DotNetFrameWork 4.5.2 (For Download Please Click here )

Download .netframework 4.5.2 from the above link and start installation as shown below:

Accept the License Terms

Step 4 : Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0 (For Download Please Click here )

Click Install

There are chances UCMA 4.0 failing if the prerequisites in the step 2 is not not installed properly then you might get below error

Media Foundation Feature missing

Open Windows Powershell (Run As Administrator)

Command:  Install-WindowsFeature Server-Media-Foundation

Restart the Server

 

Try installing Unified Communication Managed API 4.0

Now Mount the Exchange Server 2016 ISO

Double Click and Installation will start

Note: Installation can be done Unattended mode as well. Unattended mode of installation we can see in the upcoming post.

Click I Accept the License Agreement -> Click Next

Select the Recommended Settings ->  Click Next

Select Server Role that you are planning ->  Click Next

Note: Once you select Mailbox Role automaticlly Management Tools will be checked.

 

Specify the Installation Space location -> Click Next

Note : Here if you are trying for Fresh Exchange Server 2016 Installation then you will get the window to specify the Organization name.

As it’s Coexistence Organization name has already been specified while Installing Exchange Server 2010

 

Malware Protection Settings  ->  Select No ->  Click No

Click Next

After copying files completes Installation will begin

Oops Installation failed

Don’t work  Warning clearly shows that Forest Functional Level is to upgraded to Windows Server 2008 or Later

Login to Domain controller

Open Active Directory Domains and Trusts -> Right Click -> Raise Forest Functional Level

If you see the below window Forest Functional Level is in Windows Server 2003

Drop down and Select Windows Server 2008 -> Click Raise -> Click Ok

Retry the Setup again

This time it should start the Setup without any issues

Restart the Server before configuring setting in the Exchange Administration Center so that all the setting will be properly configured on the server

After Server up, just for Cross check open the Exchange Management Shell (Run As Administrator)

Run the below Command

Command :  Get-ExchangeServer |ft Name, ServerRole, AdminDisplayVersion -Auto

Ok Now open Exchange Administration Center
