SharePoint 2013 Troubleshooting: High System Resource Usage
Problem
Small development SharePoint 2013 farm, 1 WFE & 1 SQL. Observed that executing Move-SPSite commandlet on 50 GB site collection taking an unusually long time. Further observed that server GUI seemed sluggish. Checking Task Manager Performance tab, found CPU hovering at 99% and memory usage above 65%. Checking Task Manager Processes tab, found SharePoint Timer Service, IIS Worker Processes and Search components consuming most CPU and memory resources.
IISRESET and reboot did not resolve.
Solution
Cleared SharePoint configuration cache:
- Stopped SharePoint Timer Service.
- In File Explorer, navigated to: %SystemDrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft\SharePoint\Config\
- Reviewed GUID-named folders at this location, and identified one modified recently and containing XML files.
- Deleted all XML files, leaving just the file cache.ini.
- Opened the cache.ini file in NotePad, deleted its contents and replacing them with "1"; then saved the file.
- Started the SharePoint Timer Service.
After taking these steps, checked Task Manager Processes tab and found resource usage greatly reduced.
