SSRS – Parameter Lineage between Main Report and Sub Report

Overview:

The only difference between Main Report and Sub Report in SSRS is the way we execute the report. Main Report can be executed directly and if we called any report from main report then it is called Sub Report. Sub Report provides the data based on the input parameter(s) passed on main report. Sub Report can be used as Main report also.

Analysis

Main Report – State wise Census Report:

There is another report say ‘City wise Census Report’ can be run directly.

Now, I can use City wise Census Report as Sub report to State wise Population. In this way, I can see the Summary of State Population in main Report and if I need to see detailed information or city wise population information for a particular state then I simple need to click on the state.

Conclusion:

Sub Report can be used as Main Report or can be executed from main Report. Sub Report will provide the data based on the input parameter(s) value passed on the Main Report.
