Power BI and Office 365 Monitor: Generate Office 365 Health Reports

Introduction

Office 365 Monitor is an online service, which monitors the availability Office 365 tenants. It ensures that all Office 365 Services are in good health. Once Office 365 Monitoring tools detect the issue in order for users to derive the business intelligence out of it, we can use Power BI to connect to Office 365 to monitor the data and build the reports, as shown below.

Getting Started

In order to use the Office 365 Monitor, we need to have an active subscription or a free trial subscription. You can get one free trial here. While signing up, specify the user information, as shown below.

Once submitted, your subscription will be activated. However to complete the setting up of the Office 365 Monitor, you will have to specify the SharePoint Online site address.

Specify the E-mail address at which the alert notifications will be delivered and specify the site to the monitor.

Finally to actively monitor the site, we will have to grant permissions to the site. Click Accept.

Thus, we have completed the setting up of Office 365 Monitor.

We can change the settings and configuration by clicking on the hamburger menu, which is available at the top right corner.

Connect to Office 365 Monitor from Power BI

In order to connect to Power BI, we have to login to Power BI online here.

Once the credentials are entered, we will be navigated to the Get Data page from where we can connect to multiple data sources. From Services option, select Get.

It will list all the Services to which Power BI can connect.

Search for Office 365 Monitor in the search box.

On clicking Get, it will connect to Office 365 Monitoring Service.

Select the Authentication method as oAuth2 and click Sign In.

We will have to specify the credentials, which are used for registering with Office 365 Monitor tool.

Once signed in, it will import Office 365 Monitoring data to Power BI.

Data import has been completed and the dashboard is ready for use.

Generate Office 365 Health Reports

In the left navigation pane, we can see the menu item to connect to Office 365 Monitor dashboard.

On clicking the menu item, the dashboard with the detailed Office 365 analytics data will be available as the charts and figures.

Clicking on each of the Business Intelligence reports will drill through to the detailed report, as shown below.

We can also query the imported data with the specific questions. If we want to get the count of outages, we can type in “number of outages this month” in the Q&A text box.

Once you are done with the usage of Office 365 Monitor and would like to cancel the subscription, you can head over to your Subscription page. It will list the details of the subscription.

From the page, you can hit Delete Subscription to cancel the active Office 365 Monitor subscription.
