Windows 10: Technical Support Information of WMP 12 Opening in Notepad

Introduction:

A codec compresses or decompresses media files – it may be songs or videos. Various media players including Windows Media Player and other related apps use codecs to play and create media files.

A codec can encode and decode a media file. An encoder compresses a media file while decoder decompresses a media file.

If you like to know which codecs are installed on your PC you need to go through the following steps:

  1. Open Windows Media Player
  2. In the Help menu, tap or click About Windows Media Player. If you cannot find it then right-click on the blank are beside Library > Music > and opt for Show menu bar.
  3. In the About Windows Media Player dialog box, tap or click Technical Support Information.
  4. The web browser will open to show all the details like Media Player Binaries, Other Binaries, Audio Codecs, Video Codecs, MPEG/DVD Filters, plug-ins, and services installed on your PC.

Problem:

The Technical Support Information started opening in Notepad instead of a web browser.
