Exchange Online Troubleshooting: No Mailboxes found for Exchange Online

Introduction

The PST CAPTURE TOOL is a tool provided by Microsoft, which helps in migrating mailboxes between 2 different exchange server based organizations, or from Local Exchange server to Office 365.

As the Microsoft Office 365 Technical Team does not support issues or provide technical assistance on this tool, there are 2 options to obtain support on PST Capture Tool:

  1. Via Microsoft Community or Forum support (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home )
  2.  Via Paid Ticket @ Microsoft Support.

Troubleshooting

No mailboxes found for Exchange Online

The very common error which is usually seen is “No mailboxes found for Exchange Online”.

Root cause

Root causes of this error is, Target Server Administrator account or Office 365 Global Administrator account (which is used in PST CAPTURE TOOL) lacks:

  1. Proper rights or permissions in Target Server / Office 365.
  2.  Incorrect destination address.

Resolution

 Proper rights / Permissions

Management Role Entry naming “Mailbox Import Export” is a game changer over here. By default in Office 365, Global Administrator is part of a role group naming “Organization Management”. But this role groups lacks role “Mailbox Import Export”. So the plan would be :

  1. Add “MAILBOX IMPORT EXPORT” role to “ORGANIZATION MANAGEMENT” role group.
  2.  Create a new custom role group, which contains role “MAILBOX IMPORT EXPORT” and your specific GA account. If you got with this option, then I would suggest to add “Move mailboxes” ,”Mailbox Search”, “Migration” naming  Management Role Entries to your customer created role group. ( on precautionary basis )
Incorrect Destination Address :

FQDN of Office 365 servers is changed. In previous of Office 365, it was

  1. pop.outlook.com
  2. imap.outlook.com
  3. smtp.outlook.com

This was changed with new version. So the best option would be to use outlook.office365.com.

You can also use outlook.office365.com/urdomain.onmicrosoft.com if outlook.office365.com doesn’t works.
