DirSync: How To Install Dirsync on a Domain Controller

 Tip

The process of deploying DirSync on a domain controller is mostly the same as for deploying the Directory Sync tool normally.
However, the admin installing the tool will need to log-off and log-on again after the Installation Wizard is complete and before the Configuration Wizard is run.

If your computer is not a domain controller, follow the steps outlined in "DirSync: How To Install the Directory Sync Tool".

If your computer is a domain controller, you need to apply the following changes to Step 6:

  1. Deselect the Start Configuration Wizard checkbox
  2. Exit the Installation Wizard
  3. Log-off of the current session then log-in again
  4. When you have logged back on, run the Directory Sync Configuration application (either from the desktop or from the Start Menu)
  5. Continue with the configuration process (step 7 of the wiki)

This additional step of logging off and logging back in is necessary to ensure that the Directory Sync tool is installed using the least privileges possible on your domain controller.

Note

If you forget to follow the above process, the Configuration Wizard will return an error "Constraint Violation Error".
If you hit this, just log off and log in again and you can proceed.

In general, we still recommend that you deploy the Directory Sync tool on a member server rather than a Domain Controller.  Since the Directory Sync tool installs FIM 2010 R2 SP1 and SQL Server 2012 Express SP1 by default, this could add overhead to your Domain Controller machines.
