This article documents Windows operating system patches available for Windows Server 2008 R2, mostly categorized as "hotfixes". The list of fixes here are the most part, not offered via Windows Update, the Microsoft Catalog, or Windows Software Update Services. These fixes are the only way to update Windows code outside of Windows Update, until the next service pack is released.
NOTE |
Microsoft provides two categories of updates to the Windows operating systems; General Distribution Release (GDR) and Limited Distribution Release (LDR). GDR patches are more widely distributed, widely localized, widely tested, and address critical issues that can affect most if not all computers running Windows (all versions) worldwide. LDR patches are usually made publicly available, though are not widely distributed, not widely tested, and may not affect all Windows computers worldwide (client or server). For more information on this topic, see the following blog post: http://blogs.technet.com/b/instan/archive/2009/03/04/qfe-vs-gdr-ldr-hotfixes.aspx |
Limited Distribution Release (LDR) fixes are not proactively advertised and generally not available through Windows Update, the Microsoft Catalog, or Windows Software Update Services (WSUS). LDR fixes often target a specific symptom, can and often do have a positive impact on any current Windows computer. A good example is a fix to the networking components to address a performance issue. Another class of fixes have to do with slow logon.
Most of the fixes in this list have been out for some time, and have been tested and implemented by many customers. All of the fixes in this list are publicly available and fully supported Microsoft fixes. Therefore, if no issues are found in your environment, these fixes could become a baseline for all Windows Server 2008 R2 computers, physical and virtual.
In fact, one of the fixes in this list, 2775511, had Microsoft guidance that is different than most of the other fixes in this list:
"We recommend that you apply this hotfix rollup as part of your regular maintenance routine and build processes for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 computers."[
An enterprise hotfix rollup is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1](http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2775511)
Rollup 2775511 contains over 90 operating system fixes, and is highly recommended for all Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 computers, physical or virtual. When considering 2775511, please review the documentation in the KB article, as there are several issues that are known, documented, and workarounds or other fixes available.
This list was prepared by me, Robert Smith of Microsoft, a PFE of 15+ years. This list is not intended for official Microsoft guidance, nor does it alter in any way any security guidance already in place. This list is mainly comprised of fixes that you won't find offered through Windows Update. Every fix in this list uses the same Windows Component Based Servicing engine as any Windows fix. All Windows fixes, including the ones on this list, will not overwrite existing files of the same or higher version. And further, installing future Windows security updates will not conflict with the fixes on this list, because all Windows fixes include fixes for both servicing branches; LDR & GDR. The Windows Installer engine determines which version of file to install with each given fix installation, so that the current update is installed, and the components are not overwritten with older versions, etc.
These fixes are all available publicly, and are fully Microsoft supported fixes. Microsoft guidance for most fixes is to wait for the next service pack, or until you encounter the problem. However, there are many fixes in this list that could be considered important or at least recommended. The majority of these fixes address performance, reliability, or usability. These fixes will not alter Microsoft support, nor will they change the Microsoft support lifecycle of your operating system(s). If you download and use these fixes, please test extensively. Each fix has support information in the respective KB article in case support is needed.
