System Center Operations Manager 2012 R2 - Capacity Limits for URL Monitoring

Microsoft's official recommendation for URL monitoring in System Center Operations Manager is:

  1. URLs Monitored per Dedicated Management Server - 3000
  2. URLs Monitored per Dedicated Management Group - 12,000
  3. URLs Monitored per Agent - 50

These are recommendations, not hard limits. During the 2013 Holiday season, beginning with Thanksgiving and ending January 5th, 2014, we were very busy with monitoring URLs, especially for our retail customers with an e-retail presence.

In preparation, our monitoring engineers set out to see how high they could go - how many URLs could be monitored using the Web Application Availability Monitor without impacting any core management group functionality.

  1. URLs Monitored per Dedicated Management Server - ~7,500
  2. URLs Monitored per Dedicated Management Group - ~40,000
  3. URLs Monitored per Agent - ~5000

Naturally, we had to tweak both agents and management servers, but nothing overly dramatic. The design of our core Infinity Connected™ management group played the biggest role in achieving these numbers.

Our custom GSM fabric is distributed throughout both Amazon and Microsoft's cloud environments. Testing proved a URL monitoring density of 5000:1 however we governed to 2500:1 providing the capability to monitor 40,000 URLs with just 16 agents distributed between North America and Europe.
