Windows Server 2012 R2 Troubleshooting: install issue with Hyper-V Manager

I tried to install Windows Server 2012 R2 to a VM on a machine running Windows 8.1.

Error message

When I tried to boot the VM I've received the following error message:

'An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s).

Synthetic SCSI Controller (Instance ...): Failed to Power on with Error The version does not support this version of the file format.’.

Attachment

...\9600.1 6384.WINBLUE_RTM.1 30821-1 623_XG4FRE_SERVER_EVAL_EN-US-IRM_S...failed to open because of error ‘The version does not support this version of the file format.’.

‘Test’ failed to start. (Virtual machine ...)

‘Test’ Synthetic SCSI Controller (Instance ...): Failed to Power on with Error ‘The version does not support this version of the file format.’ (OxCO3A000S). (Virtual machine ID ...)

Solution

Despite what the message suggests, it is a PATH length issue (although the whole path with file name doesn't exceeded the 148 characters including spaces).

The original image file location was this: D:\Install\MS\Windows Server 2012 R2 Evaluation (180 days)\9600.16384.WINBLUE_RTM.130821-1623_X64FRE_SERVER_EVAL_EN-US-IRM_SSS_X64FREE_EN-US_DV5.ISO.

When I tried it using 'D:\Install\MS\W2012ServR2Eval.ISO' it all worked like a charm.
