How to Deactivate Schema Objects in Active Directory

Adding custom attributes or classes to an Active Directory Schema is not a reversible operation. In fact, if you try to remove a custom attribute or class you have added, you would not be able to do it without performing an Active Directory Forest recovery. However, Active Directory provides a way to deactivate an Active Directory schema object: This is not applicable on schema objects that are present in the default Active Directory schema but is applicable on objects that have been added to it.

This Wiki article shows how to deactivate a schema object in Active Directory.

To deactivate a schema object in Active Directory, you can proceed like the following:

  • Find the attribute / class to deactivate then click on its Properties

  • Set isDefunct attribute value to TRUE
