MAP: Prepare the Environment - Active Directory

The Active Directory Collector is used to collect device and user information from Active Directory Domain Services. This collector technology is used for these inventory scenarios.

In a domain that consists of Windows Server® 2003–based domain controllers, the default dynamic port range is 1025 through 5000. Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008, in compliance with Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) recommendations, increased the dynamic port range for connections. The new default start port is 49152, and the new default end port is 65535. Therefore, you must increase the remote procedure call (RPC) port range in your firewalls. If you have a mixed domain environment that includes a Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 server and Windows Server 2003, allow traffic through ports 1025 through 5000 and 49152 through 65535. The Exchange Server Inventory Scenario uses a superset of queries that gather the Exchange Server Mailbox info from Active Directory. By inventorying a single domain connected computer, MAP can enumerate all the Exchange Server information in an AD DS Forest as long as the credentials used have permission to read the Exchange system configuration information from Active Directory. MAP is able to do this because all the Exchange data MAP collects is contained in AD DS. Once it locates a domain controller from the inventoried machine, it will use that domain controller to query the entire forest and discover the Exchange Server information for the various domains.
