Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 Revision Issue Resolved

A revision was made to the WSUS offering for Windows 7 / Window Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on 5/24 to address known installation issues. We are aware that this latest revision is incorrectly reporting as "Not Installed" for machines that have already installed the previous revision of the SP1 update. Also, if this revision is approved for installation, it will reoffer to machines that have already installed the previous revision of the SP1 update. Specifically

  • Machines that have already installed SP1 do not need to reinstall this update
  • Machines that have not yet installed SP1 can safely proceed with installing this revision of the update

This issue has been corrected with a revision released Tuesday, 5/31 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time.  Please be sure to re-sync your servers to obtain the latest revisions and updates to these and other packages.

Thanks for the quick correction. Is there any information on what 'known installation issues' the 5/24 revision fixed?

Considering this is a technical blog, how about actually providing some details about what is new, so that admins who have been holding off on the deployment of SP1 for all installation issues to be fixed(I'm looking at you USB driver update bug) know that they can or can't proceed after this. Has the installation package been updated, or is this just a metadata update like the preceding updates? If the latter, then can someone please explain why the USB fix (KB2529073) hasn't been released to WSUS even though it got released to Microsoft Update?

All of my Windows Server 2008 R2 (w SP1) machine show KB972493 as "needed", but never install it. After some searching on the web it becomes clear this is a bug, and there is no satisfying workaround. It seems a real lot of people are suffering from this and it would be sweet if you could finally fix this...
