Windows Vista Security at 180 Days
Just as he did at the 90-day mark, Jeff Jones, a Microsoft Director from the Trustworthy Computing group and frequent blogger on security topics, has done a comparison of vulnerabilities discovered in Windows Vista versus other operating systems in their first 6 months of availability. Windows Vista holds up well in this comparison, showing a significantly improved vulnerability profile over its first 180 days of availability compared to Windows XP and the other operating systems that were examined. The report is available here .

Sorry, I'm not impressed by Vista's security record. How can Microsoft attest to its own Trustworthy Security Initiative when they let the USER32.DLL security bug (MS07-17, 925902) find its way into Vista? This buggy piece of code has been around since before Windows 2000. Shame on you Microsoft!Anonymous

We maybe missing the point here. OS's have never been not rock solid- too many varibles. We are finding Vista better than XP- standalone & networked- even on AS400 & VMS. More intrusive but as stated by Microsoft- not a comprehensive solution for security. The fact they have a Trustworthy Computing group (finally) is some comfort that their platforms and apps will function consistently- as opposed to a lackluster attitude in the past. For those of us that have slept in the computer room overnight fearing the worst- at least we can go home with remote to a comforting abode & a wee dram (not the memory type). For some of our users that just want their computers to work- we put up www.vista-security.info to help explain in plain english what the basics are. ALTBAnonymous
