Spammers Make 57,000 Fake Web Sites a Week

Last week my wife got an email message from a website that looked like our bank's website. It asked her to click a link and update her account information. She told me about it, I checked it out, and subsequently gave her a ten-minute lecture on the tricks that spammers use to get you to give them your personal information: using a domain name that looks like your bank's, including a link that takes you off to who knows where, and so on. So when I came across this article about spammers creating new web sites at the rate of 57,000 per week, it caught my attention.

Spammers and hackers are constantly trying to take advantage of unsuspecting consumers (also known as my parents) online. According to a three-month study by antivirus developer PandaLabs, these cyber-criminals are creating around 57,000 new fake websites every week. That's close to 3 million per year. And all of it is being done to exploit major brands.
