Quest Software Announces Oracle Database Schema Provider for Visdual Studio Team System 2010

Quest Software, Inc. announced today (Feb 24, 2009) at VSLive! San Francisco that it will offer an Oracle Database Schema Provider (DSP) for the upcoming release of Microsoft Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) 2010. Quest’s new tool provides Oracle support for VSTS, enabling Oracle developers to fully participate with other VSTS team members throughout the entire application lifecycle. The DSP will allow Oracle Developers using Visual Studio Team System to perform offline design, development and change management for Oracle databases, similarly to how Visual Studio Team System works with Microsoft® SQL Server™ databases.

Background

Continuing in their service to Oracle database professionals, Quest Software has announced their plan to deliver a Database Schema Provider (DSP) for Oracle databases for the upcoming release of Microsoft® Visual Studio® Team System 2010. The DSP will allow Oracle Developers using Visual Studio Team System to perform offline design, development and change management for Oracle databases, similarly to how Visual Studio Team System works with Microsoft® SQL Server™ databases. Supported activities include importing Oracle database schema, refactoring code, comparing schema's and merging changes, automating daily builds, generating test data, execution of database unit tests, tracking and versioning schema using TFS source code control, and automating your preferred development methodology and improving team collaboration using VSTS.

With the schema model persisted as scripts in the Visual Studio project system and optionally in the Microsoft® Visual Studio® Team System 2010 Team Foundation Server source code control system, all project artifacts from the database schema to the application source code can now be stored, versioned and managed together as a single unit.

Visual Studio Team System is an integrated application lifecycle management (ALM) solution that enables members of a team to collaborate more effectively, ensure software quality, and gain visibility into the software development lifecycle. With Visual Studio Team System 2010 and the DSP for Oracle databases from Quest Software, Oracle database professionals will now be able to work alongside other Visual Studio Team System users throughout the application lifecycle.

Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition provided support for offline development and change management of SQL Server databases only, and the Visual Studio support for Oracle development is basic; connection drivers are available but there are no tools to help them design database schemas or manage changes. Furthermore, there are no tools to help Oracle developers participate as a team member through the application lifecycle.

Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR introduced a new product architecture that provides a model representation of a database schema providing the architecture needed for supporting heterogeneous databases.

Visual Studio Team System 2010 will introduce extensibility points to expand support for other database platforms. Third parties can develop Database Schema Providers (DSPs) which implement models to expand the support for specific database platforms and versions such as DB2 and Oracle. . Quest's Oracle DSP will add support to Team System Development for Oracle and will provide the following Oracle based database project features :

· Offline Schema Development

· Import Schema

· Schema Compare

· Data Generation and Unit Testing

· Refactoring

· and more...
