SQL Server 2008 R2 Express has been released

The final release of SQL Server 2008 R2 was made publically available on April 21, 2010! SQL Server Express continues to ship in 4 different packages. In this release of Express, we simplified the installation wizard. For the November CTP release, I documented the Express installation process at https://blogs.msdn.com/petersad/archive/2009/11/13/how-to-install-sql-server-2008-r2-express-edition-november-ctp.aspx. The installation process has not changed since the November CTP, except some messages have been changed to indicate the final release.

I posted more information about this release to https://blogs.msdn.com/petersad/archive/2010/04/26/installing-sql-server-2008-r2-express.aspx.

Hello together, i also need a SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with Tools bootstrapper for implementing in our setup. We want the SQL Server to be a feature of our software product and install it silent with the needed parameters. For SLQ Server 2008 R2 Express without Tools it worked fine, because our installer is shipped with the bootstrapper package for this. but how can we create a bootstrapper for the SQL Server with Tools? Looking forward for any answer in this :) Regards, Martin

When we had meeting with China MS MVPs, most of them suggest that the express version should include more features and should have less limitation, like the DB file size, so it could better compete with mysql.

We have upgraded a 2005 Express install to 2008 R2 - the install went ok apart from some weird error messages. The KB states that SQL 2008 R2 express is supported on VM ware. After working ok for a while, the performance became abysmal - CPU going to 100% for 2-3 seconds on a simple query - 1 user only, only managed to get 1 user to log in, not the 10 who worked ok before. Move the instance to a physical machine - cpu bumps along a 10 -20% all users logged in.  Same install package. If MSDN licencing got their act together - I paid for a VS 2010 licence and MSD a month ago - still no  access. I'd raise it there. what is the best appoach to get some support on this?
