Some Recent Product and Policy Updates

It has been a while since I posted some content. Before I leave it any longer here is a round-up of some interesting news that has been happening in the world of Microsoft

Visual Studio

We have release the RTM of Update 3 for VS.2013 and a refresh of the Multi-Device Hybrid Apps (Preview) extension now supporting development on Windows 7.

Don’t forget where we are going. Amazing things coming out for ASP vNext and enhancements to C# to make our lives even easier in Visual Studio “14” CTP 3. This version can be run side-by-side with existing instances of VS but please keep in mind it is a preview version.

New .NET End of Life Policy for .NET v4 Framework

If you have not already heard the .NET v4 Framework (specifically versions 4.0, 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2) will reach end of life on January 12, 2016. This new policy does not affect the existing policy for .NET 3.5 SP1, which will continue to receive support for the duration of the operating system lifecycle.

Websites think my Windows Phone is an Android phone

If you are running the latest developer preview, Windows Phone 8.1 Update. Besides for all the cool new features an important difference for website builders is that the IE11 user agent string has changed. Specifically on desktop we have removed the MSIE token and for Phone we have removed the MSIE token and added a bunch of tokens that could make the phone look like an iPhone or Android device depending on how your detection works.

Now is the time to remove that code that checks for the IE browser to add hacks and other workarounds. Rather start using feature detection and adaptive layouts.
