Updates Resource Center for SharePoint Products and Technologies

Updates to the SharePoint Products and Technologies become available periodically. To successfully plan for and deploy these updates, use the process outlined in the Deployment Roadmap for Updates and in the articles linked to from the roadmap.

Deployment Roadmap for Updates

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

Step 1: View the presentation Understanding and deploying hotfixes, public updates, and service packs.

Step 2: Read the article about deploying software updates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

Step 3: Download and install the update for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

Step 4: Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration wizard.

Step 5: (Optional) Download and install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Language Pack.

Office SharePoint Server 2007

Step 1: View the presentation Understanding and deploying hotfixes, public updates, and service packs.

Step 2: Read the article about deploying software updates for SharePoint Server 2007.

Step 3: Download and install the update for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

Step 4: Download and install the update for SharePoint Server 2007.

Step 5: Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration wizard.

Step 6: (Optional) Download and install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Language Pack.

Step 7: (Optional) Download and install SharePoint Server 2007 Language Pack.

Major Updates

April Cumulative Update (CU)
Released April 30, 2009
The April CU includes hotfixes and improvements for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (KB 968850) and Office SharePoint Server 2007 (KB 968851). The April Cumulative Update also fixes known issues that affect the Stsadm mergecontentdbs operation. For details about the issue, see KB 969242: The STSADM MergeContentDB command may cause database corruption in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. If you plan to merge or split content databases, we strongly recommend that you install the April Cumulative Update.

Service Pack 2
Released April 28, 2009
Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes Service Pack 1 and all the major updates since the release of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Office SharePoint Server 2007.

February Cumulative Update (CU)
Released February 24, 2009
The February CU includes hotfixes and improvements for Windows SharePoint  Services 3.0 (KB 961755) and Office SharePoint Server 2007 (KB 961756). In addition, this new update package is designed to provide a more convenient way for SharePoint administrators to keep all files in their SharePoint installations up-to-date.

December Cumulative Update (CU)
Released December 16, 2008
The December CU includes hotfixes and improvements for Office SharePoint Server 2007 (KB 960011) and Windows SharePoint  Services 3.0 (KB 960010). In addition, this new update package is designed to provide a more convenient way for SharePoint administrators to keep all files in their SharePoint installations up-to-date. October Cumulative Update (CU)
Released October 28, 2008
The October CU for Office servers includes hotfixes for Office SharePoint Server 2007 (KB 957693 and KB 958567) and a hotfix package for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (KB 957691). Previous fixes released in the August CU are rolled up into the October CU. For more information about cumulative updates and their role in the scheduled delivery model see KB 953878: Cumulative updates are available from the Microsoft Office team to deliver hotfixes for reported problems.

Infrastructure Update
Released July 15, 2008
The Infrastructure Update includes several updates for Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, plus the addition of new Enterprise Search features to SharePoint Server 2007.

Service Pack 1
Released December 8, 2007
Service Pack 1 (SP1) includes a number of hot fixes across Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

Note
Unless there is a rollup release that includes the current and previous updates, the best practice is to apply software updates in the order in which they were released.

Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes a number of hot fixes across SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, as well as enhancements to improve performance and availability. Infrastructure Update

The Infrastructure Update includes several updates for SharePoint Products and Technologies, plus the addition of new Enterprise Search features to Office SharePoint Server 2007 including Federated Search capabilities and a unified Search Administration Dashboard. Service Pack 1

Service Pack 1 (SP1) includes a number of hot fixes across SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, new Stsadm commands for repartitioning databases and renaming host site collections, and updates to documentation that address performance and capacity planning concerns. Existing Deployment or New Installation?

If you have an existing installation of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, follow the Deployment Roadmap for Updates.

If you have not yet installed Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, you can install a version that already includes SP1: download Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with SP1.

Office SharePoint Server 2007

Existing Deployment or New Installation?

If you have an existing installation of SharePoint Server 2007, follow the Deployment Roadmap for Updates.

If you have not yet installed SharePoint Server 2007, you can install a version that already includes SP1: download the trial version of SharePoint Server 2007, and then upgrade from the trial version to the full product version. Read the blog entry for more information.
