Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 V3.0 is available

The latest version of the standalone OLE DB Provider for DB2 is now available as part of the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Feature Pack at the following link:

Installation Prerequisites

OLE DB Provider for DB2 V3.0 requires one of the following software products as installation prerequisites.

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 with SP3

Features
The Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 V3.0 supports the following features.

  • Installation using an interactive and scriptable setup program
  • Help through on-line user documentation
  • Assistance in creating, modifying and storing data source definitions using Data Provider-specific Data Access Tool and Data Source Wizard, or common OLE DB Data Links
  • Access to remote DB2 servers across TCP/IP network connections
  • Execution of dynamic SQL commands (DDL and DML), including CALL statements for stored procedures (with multiple result sets)
  • Trace Utility

Supported IBM DB2 Servers
The Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 V3.0 supports the following IBM DB2 servers.

  • IBM DB2 for z/OS V8.1 and DB2 for z/OS V9.1
  • IBM DB2 for i5/OS V5R4 and DB2 for i5/OS V6R1
  • IBM DB2 UDB for Windows, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux V9.1, V9.5, V9.7

    Is IBM's U2 database family - i.e. UniVerse and UniData systems - supported by this provider? If so, where can one find documentation on setting up the connections to these systems?

    No, the OLE DB Provider for DB2 does not support the UniVerse and UniData platforms.

    Why I need SQL Server for DB2 provider?

    You don't need SQL Server in general to use a DB2 Provider. It is just that this particular version is offered as an additional free add-on to SQL Server for those customers that want to integrate SQL Server with IBM DB2.
