.NET Framework 4 now available on Windows Update/WSUS
The .NET Framework 4 which has been available on the Microsoft Download Center since 4/12/2010 is now also available through the Windows Update and WSUS channels starting today.
The .NET Framework 4 is available in 2 flavors – the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (for client platforms such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7) and the .NET Framework 4 (with additional features for server platforms such as Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2).
If you are wondering, one of the goals of the .NET Framework 4 was to make it non-impactful to existing applications, so the .NET Framework 4 is a side-by-side release with earlier versions of the .NET Framework. Therefore, if you are running applications based on an earlier version these applications will this be automatically upgraded to use the newer version. For enterprise customers that may have unique business requirements and do not want to have the .NET Framework 4 deployed to their machines, this KB article describes how you can block the deployment of the .NET Framework 4 in your environment.
You can find more information about the .NET Framework here.

DGo, Bill. The .NET Framework 4 has a couple of different SKUs - the "Client Profile" and "Full" and the appropriate one is offered via WU based on upon the target OS - client machines get the client profile while servers get the full treatment. That said, you should be seeing the update on WSUS, if you are still not seeing it please call Microsoft support and they should be able to help resolve the issue. -JamshedAnonymous

Folks, I checked with the team that worked on this WU release, they tell me this update can be found under "Feature Pack" classification (since it is a new release and does not replace any earlier release). Also, in certain cases the update will not be offered - this will happen if the customer has a pre-release version of the .NET Framework 4 (beta or RC) installed or if they have blocked the .NET Framework 4 by installing a blocker registry key as described here:support.microsoft.com/.../982320. -Jamshed
