SharePoint and the Windows 2003 /3GB Switch

I encountered a customer today that was receiving "Server Out of Memory" errors on their WFEs.  Upon troubleshooting, we discovered the server was using the /3GB switch.  So I thought I would remind folks of the following KB article:

The Windows Server 2003 /3GB switch is not supported in Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 or in later versions or in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2 or in later versions

We removed the switch from the startup and the errors went away...

[Updated May 4, '07: I was talking with my buddy Shane about this so I thought I'd give some more perspective.  I've have had several instances with customers that faced similar OOM issues where the /3GB switch seemed to make no difference and removing it did not fix the errors.  So I don't want readers to get the wrong idea that this will always work.  Having said that, this is the third customer I've had where this switch is definitely involved in the OOM issues and removing it apparently fixed the problems.  I'm working with these customers to continue to monitor their situations to see if there are other consequences to removing this switch.]
