Available: Add a Recycle Bin to Windows® SharePoint® Services for Easy Document Recovery

In this article, we'll take advantage of the extensibility of WSS and both its server-side and client-side object models to build a restore feature that works like the Recycle Bin in Windows Explorer. We'll examine WSS document library server-side events and will develop a .NET event handler class for asynchronous server-side processing of those events. In the end, you'll have a working recycle bin for document libraries. Additionally, the lessons learned will help you write your own custom workflow applications based on the WSS document library event model.

Telecommunications Provider Revolutionizes Web Site Management and Reduces IT Costs

Swisscom , Switzerland 's leading telecommunications operator uses a comprehensive Web site to share corporate information with customers and partners. Historically, content was managed using a UNIX-based system, but this became increasingly inefficient. All site updates required intervention from technology professionals and Swisscom suffered frequent crashes, making it difficult to publish quarterly figures in accordance with the Stock Exchange Act. To address these issues, the company deployed Microsoft Content Management Server 2002. Now, content owners can upload and update the site themselves, reducing IT management costs and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation. IT professionals from Swisscom IT Services also manage distributed applications and hardware centrally, eliminating costly site visits. Overall, IT costs have been reduced by 10 percent.

Spanish Bank Launches E-Banking Using Integrated Technology Solution

In mid-2000, the Banco Popular Group, a leading financial services enterprise in Spain, established its Internet subsidiary, Bancopopular-e.com. Specializing in credits, mortgages, and means of payment, the project was an immediate success. However, the additional workload demanded the automation of many manual processes. The company initiated a pioneering intranet project based on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, aimed at improving its internal processes and bolstering staff efficiency. The intranet has realized a host of benefits, helping Bancopopular-e.com's commercial staff increase efficiencies and, as a consequence of improved service levels, boost customer loyalty. The group has also benefited from faster access to information, greater efficiency through the use of a sales scheduler, and greater security of information.

Romanian Chemicals Plant Chooses Microsoft Over Open Source and Expects Total ROI in Two Years

Oltchim, one of the biggest manufacturers of chemicals in Romania and southeastern Europe, wanted to upgrade its operating system and desktop tools to save money, increase productivity, and better manage its 500 desktop computer estate. Over many years, Oltchim had invested in disparate systems, including open source, and also lacked centralized management of its IT. The company chose Microsoft Windows Server 2003, part of Microsoft Windows Server System integrated server software, and Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 instead of OpenOffice, and implemented the upgrade with Microsoft partner Crescendo. Oltchim expects to see a complete return on investment in less than two years, thanks to the low total cost of ownership of the Microsoft solution. IT administration time will be cut by half by using remote management to upgrade software on users' computers and answer helpdesk calls. Centralized IT management will result in a more secure network that is better able to support a business competing in the global marketplace.

Portal Solution Brings the Whole Community Together to Raise Educational Standards

Working as part of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) information and communication technology (ICT) Test Bed project, Shireland Language College, based in Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, wanted to deploy a managed learning environment to support distance learning, personalized learning, and inclusion across a network of local schools. It decided that the Microsoft Learning Gateway offered the best fit for its needs. This portal solution is based around Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server and Microsoft Class Server version 3.0. The Learning Gateway was deployed in 2004 by a partnership formed between Shireland, independent consultants, Microsoft, and Microsoft Gold Certified Partner Teksys. For the 10 participating schools and colleges in Sandwell, each pupil, teacher, and parent has a personalized space within the portal. Class Server allows teachers to distribute differentiated tasks to pupils, according to needs and abilities. Teachers can also collaborate to improve best practices across schools, and excluded students can use the Internet-based solution to keep up with their schoolwork.

Unified Administration Portal Improves Business Control and Service Quality

Orange Israel has implemented a single interface that presents data from a variety of core technology systems through a single Web portal. Users no longer have to access multiple interfaces to manage disparate information technology systems. Instead, they now have a comprehensive view of activity across the operation, presented to them as graphical displays and reports—all of which is easily accessible from a single point. The solution was created using Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services, and Visual Studio .NET 2003, as well as Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003. Following implementation, Orange Israel has achieved a 75 per cent reduction in application development times, business managers have improved control, and the company's customers are benefiting from improved quality of service.

AchieveForms and MCMS in North East Lincolnshire

When Business Web Software introduced an integration between AchieveForms and Microsoft Content Management Server, it became possible for North East Lincolnshire to implement the sort of solution they were looking for. Integration took place in late November 2004.

The integration is based on a custom control that is included in an MCMS template and lets MCMS editors create electronic forms in the production environment they are accustomed to. A forms page is created either by selecting the form to include on the page from a drop-down list of existing forms, or by building the form on the new page using the AchieveForms editor. The approval and publishing of the forms page is managed by MCMS.

Software Consultancy Develops Mobile Solution that Achieves Return on Investment in One Week

Many of Anglia Business Solutions's employees spend much of their time on the road visiting customers—selling and consulting on the IT solutions that Anglia develops. Traditionally, these workers relied heavily on paper-based processes for capturing data for their timesheets and billing information. They also made lengthy telephone calls to gather customer information and directions. In 2004, the organization developed the Anglia Mobile Portal, which connects these users to the company's Microsoft Business Solutions–Navision 4.0 system by means of their Microsoft Windows Mobile-based handheld devices. They now have customer information at their fingertips, including maps displaying directions, as well as an easy-to-use interface for capturing timesheet information, mileage, and expenses. As a result, the company has freed up well over 100 hours a week that used to be spent dealing with paper-based processes.

June 15, 2005: Interlink and Softchoice Webinar: Best Practices for Delivering Powerful SharePoint Solutions to the Business (Product focus: Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server)

SharePoint has been touted as the new ‘killer app’ that will allow knowledge workers to increase productivity and make better and more informed decisions. However, many organizations have struggled with its use and become discouraged when the technology is misapplied, ignored, or circumvented. The reality is that SharePoint is a platform – not a solution – and to transform it into a truly valuable collaborative and information based solution involves an overarching interrelation of systems and people across function, lines of business, and external partnerships. Walking us through an example of an organization using SharePoint for knowledge management and business process automation, Interlink’s Josh Swihart will show you how you can create a flexible foundation for your business using SharePoint. He will share proven best practices for designing and deploying SharePoint solutions that address real corporate needs and discuss how, when done correctly, you can build advocates within the business to fuel even more creative uses of the technology to drive measurable efficiencies.
