Build Your Next Internet Connected BBQ with Microsoft Internet of Things Offerings We’re now in an era where powerful computing has become portable and cheap. Coupled with advancements in connectivity, this has enabled new experiences like “Text me when my steak reaches the perfect temperature” for an impeccable BBQ, or “Let my neighbours know if my house has been invaded” for increased home safety. It’s been exciting to see such advancements with the Windows Platform, the Universal App Model launched last year, and company-wide initiatives to unlock new opportunities for developers and embrace the Internet of Things (IoT) wave. Recently, Raspberry Pi Foundation brought out the Raspberry Pi 2, and it has been announced that Windows 10 will support Raspberry Pi 2. We can get it free for the Maker community through the Windows Developer Program for IoT, soon to come. Last year Microsoft put Windows on the Intel Galileo with the Windows Developer Program for IoT. Today, Windows gets even better for IoT and Maker scenarios by supporting makers on Raspberry Pi 2. This means that the familiar tools, techniques, and languages you already know today can be used to target a new set of devices like the Raspberry Pi 2, and the newly announced HoloLens running on Windows 10. Stay tuned for more details at Build 2015. So back to our impeccable BBQ. Imagine, a Steak-o-Meter built right from your garage, using Windows 10 on the Raspberry Pi 2. It measures the temperature of your steak while pushing data to the cloud, with Azure Machine Learning slapped on top to constantly learn about the best temperature to cook your perfect steak. In integration with the Microsoft Intelligent System’s Services it will bring notifications to your phone just in time for the steak to be moved from the BBQ, to your plate, with the cricket ready to stream on your wall through the HoloLens. If you’re interested in getting started, check out my demo heavy session on the Internet of Things with Windows at TechED NZ 2014, and start building your next dream Steak-o-Meter! |
