The panel explored the latest trends in consumerization and social media in the enterprise. Specifically, they discussed:

  • The increasing variety of mobile devices that IT must support, manage, and secure

  • The impact on employee productivity

  • The importance of striking a balance between enabling new technologies and securing data

  • How to establish clear policies for social networking use

  • How to integrate social computing with enterprise business processes

  • How to use social computing to engage customers

The panel provided a well-balanced view of both the challenges and opportunities around consumerization and social media. On the one hand, bringing new unsupported devices into the enterprise presents significant hurdles in regards to management and security. And social media underscores the personal use of the Internet during working hours. On the other hand, organizations are anxious to attract new talent, and many have acknowledged that these areas represent the new world of work. Finding ways to secure and manage devices and support social media in the enterprise could actually increase productivity, not to mention employee satisfaction.
