Thanks for giving us access to 7, I successfully downloaded it and received my key. I'm having another problem though, which some others may also run into. Each window has a "Send Feedback" link in the top-right corner. When I try to use it, I get "The given Live ID does not have permission to submit bugs for the Connect form defined for Feedback Tool, or the service is unavailable". Presumably this is because I'm not registered on Connect as a Windows 7 beta tester. Is there a way for MSDN subscribers to submit feedback? Thanks, Chris

I am unable download Windows 7 Beta at all, are there any issues ?? [Chris responds: We aren't aware of any issues at this time.  Please feel free to privately mail me with your repro steps (my profile is here:  http://blogs.msdn.com/user/Profile.aspx?UserID=134865) and we can troubleshoot this.  If there is a systematic outtage, I'll post the info.]

I am getting the same "The given Live ID does not have permission to submit bugs for the Connect form defined for Feedback Tool, or the service is unavailable" ...even though this is the same Live ID I've used to download the beta. I've already found a number of bugs worth reporting, probably. It would be nice to report them. I seemed to be able to report the bugs before I put in the product key.......

I'm having the same problem as Chris.  I was able to get my key and enter it, however I get the error "Live ID does not have permission to submit bugs for the Connect form defined for Feedback Tool, or the services is unavailable." when I enter my Live ID credentials. Good job on 7, so far it looks really good!

Hi ! I also have this problem (Live ID does not have permission to submit bugs for the Connect form defined for Feedback Tool, or the services is unavailable). I am not part of the Connect Beta program, I downloaded the Beta from MSDN and would like to submit a bug report.  [Mike responds: Sounds good Alexander.  I will post information here on how MSDN and TechNet subscribers can submit Windows 7 feedback as soon as we have it.  Thanks!]

How do I get a product key for Windows7 beta

  • Anonymous
    January 09, 2009
Well... I can't get any more Win 7 beta keys (I have 6, I think). I assumed each key would work on up to 10 PCs, but each key only seems to activate a single PC. Any word from anyone at Microsoft as to whether or not keys will activate more than one Win 7 beta, and whether MSDN users will be able to access more keys? I also assumed we'd be able to get up to 10 keys and that each key would activate on several PCs, not just one... Anyway if anyone at MS can please respond I'd appreciate it! Cheers and thanks Alex. [Chris responds: You should be able to grab 10 keys.  Please try again.]

I've downloaded windows7 from MSDN and got my key there.  But when I entered it I got the error: Wrong product key for windows SKU.  I again got a new key from MSDN subscription, but still the same [Mike responds:  I'm updating my comment here because I continue to get questions about this error.  Unlike most versions of Windows, the Checked Build allows the user to select which SKU they want to install prior to entering the product key.  The keys we provide, however, for Windows 7 Beta and RC will only work for the Ultimate edition of Windows 7.    The error you’re seeing appears when, using the checked build, you have selected SKU like Enterprise or Home Edition and then have entered the Windows 7 Beta/RC Ultimate key.  Since the Ultimate key doesn’t work with a SKU that is not Ultimate, the error “Wrong product key for Windows SKU” appears.     To address this, we actually recommend downloading and using the non-checked version of Windows 7.  Checked builds of Windows are actually intended for specific driver development scenarios, and it actually runs significantly slower than the non-checked build (also known as the “Free” build). Please take a look at this page which describes the difference between Checked and Free: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms792442.aspx. If you are sure you’re interested in the Checked Build, you must select the ‘ultimate’ edition to use with your keys. If you are still having issues, go ahead and contact me directly via clicking the 'email' link on my profile page: http://blogs.msdn.com/user/Profile.aspx?UserID=162057.  Please send me your actual product key and I'll check it out for you.  Also let me know which file you downloaded, x86, x64, checked, and the exact text of the error you're getting, if possible.   Thanks, Mike]

I'm also unable to submit bugs/feedback and get the same error: "Live ID does not have permission to submit bugs for the Connect form defined for Feedback Tool, or the services is unavailable." I'm a member of the Windows 7 Beta program on Connect.  I'm able to sign in to the Connect site using my Live ID using IE8 running on the offending Win7 machine.

Hi Chris, Many thanks for that - I was able to get more keys just a couple of minutes ago. Just want to clarify something - is each key only for one computer, or is each key supposed to activate up to 10 computers? Thus far I'm only able to activate one computer with each key, which clearly answers my question... but is this meant to be the case, or will the keys end up being able to activate multiple computers? Cheers and many thanks Alex [Chris responds: The number of activations is determined between two external groups and I don't have the answer for you yet. I'll look into it and update this post once I know for sure.]

[Jule says: the different keys work differently, and we have asked the team best able to tell us the details about this key.] So far it seems that one key one computer is the go, but will this change? Same as Chris (and others) - unable to send feedback whilst signing in under either my Technet Plus or MSDN live IDs.. it's a shame guys - you are missing out on valuable beta testing here, and people will give up clicking the 'send feedback' after the first couple of days if it just doesn't work...

To Julie: Many thanks. I'll check back for updates on MSDN delivered Win 7 keys here. To OddityGiven and others asking: This article that I wrote explains where to legally download Windows 7 from right now: http://www.itwire.com/content/view/22583/1103/ The download links for the 32bit and 64bit versions of Win 7 beta 1 are on page 2. As for those who are not MSDN, TechNet or Connect subscribers wanting keys, don't worry about the key right now, just download the 32bit or 64bit version and install it - you get 30 days before needing activation. Neowin and other sites have details on other legal ways to get keys but none seem to be working at this very moment, so you'll just need to try again tomorrow or the next day. I'm sure there'll be enough keys to go around, and you don't need a key to install, so get your Win 7 download and try it later. Alternatively anyone can buy a subscription to MSDN, TechNet or Connect (all Microsoft services) but if you're not a developer or other "microsoft professional" and just need a download location and a key then a subscription is not necessary. That said if you feel you MUST have a key then a subscription is one way to get a key right NOW. Hope this helps, no idea if this will be published by the moderator or not :-) Cheers Alex

If you need a legal Win 7 beta 1 key, and you aren't a member of MSDN (and don't want to pay the subscription to get one) you can now go to www.microsoft.com/windows7 to officially download the beta there. This article http://www.itwire.com/content/view/22591/1103/ which I wrote explains how you can legally get a Win 7 beta 1 key for the 32bit or 64-bit versions of Win 7. Actually it appears that Win 7 32 and 64 bit use the same keys. Anyway no idea if the blog moderators will publish this but if you're here reading it and you want a download or a key and you aren't an MSDN subscriber then you can legally get Win 7 beta 1 easily now. Cheers Alex.   [Julie says - thanks Alex!]

Chris, it seems the Windows 7 Technet beta is different from the publicly available beta that started last friday. The Feedback tool with the Technet beta(iso and or product key used) requires a Windows 7 (tbeta) connect account for you to be able to register any bug reports. Can you verify this? Thank you! Kind regards, Nick van Wieren [Julie says: if you are an MSDN Subscriber, go to the MSDN Subscriptions Home Page and sign in and look at Giving Feedback announcement, to see how to register on Connect site and provide feedbback. A TechNet specific link will be on the TechNet Suscriptions Home Page - visible after log in, once we receive it this week.]

Chris, The ISO DVD image (from TechNet) and ten keys were from the SAME source. The additional 10 keys were from MSDN The singular key - was from the public beta site.  (That was a long shot - I didn't really expect this one to work!!) At least 10 of the TechNet keys SHOULD have worked with the TechNet ISO. This was a fresh partitioned and formatted hard drive - not an upgrade over something (which was an option offered). So I can't tell you if the failure to join a domain is a bug or a factor of the OS not being activated. Happy to provide additional info if you need.  Look up Certified Partner Atlantic Technology Group LLC for contact info. Best, [Chris responds: I've updated my earlier post.  I see you chose the "checked" ISO.  And I see you installed "Business" or "Business N".  Your key will work if you choose the "Ultimate" version instead.]

Just a guess, but at this point, Microsoft probably doesn't want feedback from over 2 million people. They probably just want people to submit the automatic reports when things crash. If that's the case, removing the "Send Feedback" link would have been a good idea. Since we can't submit feedback, that's what I did, I just disabled the link so I wouldn't have to be reminded of it anymore. :-) http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/3821/windows-7-beta-remove-the-send-feedback-link-from-the-title-bar/ [Chris responds: Everyone is encouraged to provide feedback.  We'd love to get feedback from over 2 million people.  Sign up to leave feedback by following the instructions on the MSDN Subscription homepage (assuming you are a MSDN Subscriber).]
