How to Verify Your Windows Store Account

For students the Windows Store Develop account registration is free, however, to ensure you’re a human and not a registration bot a credit card is required for registration.  Also you ensure the account has a valid credit card number between .01 cents and 5.00 is temporally charged to the account.  This card is revered with you verify you account.

Why verify?

  1. Your app can’t go into the store until you do
  2. The small temporary charge won’t be reversed until you do.

How can you verify the account?  Good question.  Here is how.

  1. Log into your Windows Store account with your Microsoft ID (https://appdev.microsoft.com/StorePortals/)
  2. Click on the Dashboard tab – you’ll see your dashboard and there you be text and a link talking about verifying your account.  The verify account might also be listed in the left navigation links)
  3. By logging into your charge card account (or calling your charge card provider), you either get the 3 digit code from temporary charge made to you card or the amount changed (likely easier to find).
  4. One you’ve clicked on the verify account link you see a screen like the one below where you’ll enter EITHER the 3 digit transaction code or the amount changed to the card.

I am not a student, so I was charged $49. But when I click on the [Verify your payment method] link, the server keeps returning the same page. I never get to the screen like the one above. There is no place to enter the payment verification information, I was able to submit my app, but the certification is stuck on the first step because [We can't list your app in the Store until you verify your payment method.].

I finally got it to work by repeatedly clicking the [Verify] link (10-12 times in rapid succession) until the server finally decided to give me the opportunity to request a new security code via email. After entering the new security code, I finally was served the above page and verified my account with data from my bank statement.
