System Center Virtual Machine Manager Review

ADT magazine has recently published a short review of VMM. The review, plus a link to downloading the current beta of the product, is available here.

It's interesting to note how much emphasis is on the major changes - this really is a major leap forward in the product; more so than a Beta 1 to Beta 2 jump would normally lead you to believe.

New/enhanced features in Beta 2 are:

  • rewritten interface
  • integration with Operations Manager 2007
  • much much much better physical to virtual (p2v) capability
  • full Powershell support

I remember spending a few weeks getting VSMT deployed with a customer - in 2005, this was the main virtual machine management approach. It worked ok, but required deep knowledge of networking, hardware configuration, PXE, scripting, virtual server and IIS. Things have moved on a lot in the past 18 months...
