Poll: When should Lumia Camera revert pro settings to default values?
Update 2015-05-12 - This poll is now closed. Thanks for all the responses and comments. We'll summarize the results in an upcoming post.
One of the new features introduced in the Lumia Camera beta app is that your Pro Settings are remembered when resuming the camera app within 30 minutes. This means that you can switch to other apps during a photo shoot and then carry on shooting using the same settings without losing a beat.
However, if you only return to the camera app much later when you're likely in a different situation, you'll find the pro settings have reverted to their default values.
The Lumia Camera team is now looking for your feedback about this approach.
When is the right time to reset the pro settings to avoid missing a great shot due to incorrect settings?
Please answer to the poll below and feel free to comment to this post with any additional explanation. We'll reveal the results in a follow-up post.

Why we can't have all of this with settings?Anonymous

I would like it no inform me when it has reset the settings. And I would also like it to notify me if I have left it with custom settings. At least it could make an educated guess and warn me if the image will be totally over or underexposed.Anonymous

I voted to only restore settings to auto when user toggles settings back to auto. In other words, leave my settings alone!Anonymous

I do like it when I launch the camera and all the manual settings are back to auto in a new scenario, but I also sometimes like to keep the custom settings for a period of time. Like Leandro said, can we have all of the options? I voted to have a button that goes back to default which shows up when custom settings are active. That will give us a quick way to reset to default when needed.Anonymous

Why not just put a toggle switch on the screen where the camera will remember your last professional setting(until you change it) permanently and just toggle back to default setting to take a normal picture. Then you can toggle back to your professional setting to continue talking your professional pictures at any point in the future.Anonymous

A saved settings for pro option would be great. You could select a previously saved pro setting(s)when desired.Anonymous

I don't care about when reset settings. But I really need not craft a 5M photo.Anonymous

Guys, please don't try to be clever. A good UX design never surprises. Look at ALL cameras out there - no auto reset as far as the eye can see. Please don't ignore 100+ years of camera design wisdom.Anonymous

For example I know that Lumia Camera always clips the highlights a little more than I like (so does my Nikon D700). This is part subjective. So I like to dial in a 2/3 stop underexposure and just leave that setting always there.Anonymous

"When is the right time to reset the pro settings to avoid missing a great shot due to incorrect settings?" I think you answered your own poll right there. Reset settings and you surprise the user. Bad UX design. You are basically saying that you, the programmer, knows better than me, the photographer, how I want my photo exposed. Please don't treat us like idiots in the pro mode.Anonymous

Hi, Lumia Camera Team. I would rather suggest to keep the Custom settings as it is. When a User opens the Lumia Camera app he will be greated with his custom setting he can set the settings back to default by just Double Tapping any where on the screen. Or else one more option is that every time the app is started a pop up will ask to keep the settings or change to default, but I think it may annoy the User. You have more knowledge then me so select either of the thing. Thanks For asking the suggestion. And One Last request please make the Lumia Camera 5 app available for Lumia 1020. Thank You:)Anonymous

I'm up for keeping up my settings the way I wanted. I back the "don't surprise me" idea. I don't want to be thinking like "oh, thats right! It's been 30 min. from last time I opened the app and I will have to adjust all my settings again..." I think it would be good to keep the settings and add a button to reset everything to defaults if I want to.Anonymous

Preference: Add a "Custom" setting that remains unchanged; you manually change it when you want to. Otherwise, a 2-hour period seems good for retaining settings.Anonymous

Simple, just include the M mode, A, S and Pre loaded. Just create a virtual Selector key , with the M Mode - A - S equal in DSLR. Copy the Nokia N8 Menu and improve .Anonymous

30 mins and pop out a opinion, reset or last setting ? If user doesn't choose, then jump to last setting.Anonymous

Maybe it's a good way that it can remind us before it revert to default values.Anonymous

Why not have a set amount of slots that you could save your settings to and then access via a button on the camera screen.Anonymous

There should be a settings option to choose this. By default I would prefer for settings to be kept always.Anonymous

Why don't they let users decide this feature at the first run of the app? Then you can change it from the settingsAnonymous

It should be possible to define your personal"default settings" for the type of photos you shoot. It should be indicated on the screen, if the "default" is being used or not.Anonymous
May 07, 2015
I would like to have the possibility of locking each parameter via a dedicated button (pinnable), in order to keep the settings even with the app closed and without time limits, as long as you don't disable it.Anonymous

Too many problems, keep it simple. When should Lumia Camera revert pro settings to default values?
- for normal users (that want point & click): as soon as you exit the app
- for others: let us save and pin to home every combination we want. So if we want simple we can start the app, otherwise we can use pinned/saved presets.

When should Lumia Camera revert pro settings to default values? I recommend to consider long touch setting icon (bottom) in top app, then you can revert pro settings to defaultAnonymous

I think 5 minutes, because if you are shooting at something, you may get quickly distracted by something, but you still want to get your job done and will probably go back to it as soon as you can. Any longer than that, to me, it is simply an assumption that you are still on the same task. However best thing would be to have a setting for this, as the above could apply to a casual photographer shooting at stuff he is selling, but maybe be a hassle for someone tending to shoot at his subjects for linger or with a favorite specific setting..Anonymous

Custom presets and a "Reset all" to recall via menu would be very appreciated.Anonymous
May 08, 2015
How about this:
- In preferences, choose if app should reset settings after 30 minutes, or never reset.
- Add a reset all settings control on the camera screen. No surprises, user decides. Additionally, custom presets is a good idea.

Why did the half circle adjustment layout leave? The new interface is awfulAnonymous
May 11, 2015
Just add a switch. Default and Custom. The app opens stay in Custom for 30 minutes, after that passes in Default, without losing the Custom settings. Best would be the possibility to save more customs settings, like "close up", "night", "sunny", etc.Anonymous
