“How do I migrate from Microsoft Virtual Server to Hyper-V?”

Get the free Windows Server 2008 R2 evaluation.I haven’t been asked that for quite awhile (about 3 years, actually).  But we did have a few people at our event in Saint Louis that are still using Microsoft’s previous virtualization solution, Virtual Server.  Thankfully, because Hyper-V uses the same .VHD format for virtual hard disk files as did Virtual Server, the process is actually pretty straightforward.  From this document:

Migrating your virtual machines that are running on Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 to Hyper-V is a straightforward process. To migrate, you do the following general steps:

  1. Prepare the virtual hard disk in Virtual Server.
  2. Move the .vhd file (if necessary).
  3. Create a new virtual machine in Hyper-V using the .vhd file.
