Windows Embedded Compact 7 Setup Public CTP
It has been over a year since I joined the Windows Embedded Compact team. When I started I was assured I would have my work cut out for me. Customers had informed us that the current setup was, to be nice, out of date. After diving into the Windows CE 6.0 installation and QFE process, I realized that I was in for a lot of work.
During this time I worked closely with the Windows Installer XML (WiX) Toolset Community to ensure that the installation I was to build would make it more than a couple of months out the door! I spoke with many of the members of the community and used some of the early forms of the Burn project to make it to this point. The architecture allowed us to create, what I affectionately call, the business layer to drive the Burn engine.
If you have installed or will install the new Windows Embedded Compact 7 Public CTP I am interested in knowing how your installation experience went!

The installation process went generally well. I installed on a clean virtual Windows XP SP3. Uninstall went well as well. ShaiAnonymous

Installation take long time. Also installation need to fail sooner if it detects VS2008SP1 is not installed rather than do some processing for a while then go and try to detect VS2008 SP1 and then failing. --rcAnonymous

@rajnishC Yes, the expected installation time for a full installation is over 1 hour. If you are a part of any special programs Windows Embedded has, please make sure to uninstall all older content before installing now items. We also have a bug tracking on the VS2008 detection issue you mentioned.Anonymous

Hi, I am trying to install Windows Embedded Compact 7 Installation. After filling the form I received license key and a URL to donwload the WinEC7. I have downloaded the .exe. In earlier versions of CE I use to see a large setup files. If I run this .exe will it download the setup or it will istall the WinEC7? Thank You & Regards, GSRAnonymous

@GSR Now, much like the past setup.exe we use to publish, the content will be downloaded and installed in on process. On the more recent blog posting about the RTM Eval (blogs.msdn.com/.../windows-embedded-compact-7-evaluation-download.aspx) there has been a request to allow content to be downloaded but not installed. How do I load this on the netbook computer that the entire problem is with...since the problem is THAT I CAN'T CONNECT TO THE INTERNET?!?!?! I need some help with this little netbook! @sue (Spayer@yahoo.com) I'm not quite sure I understand what you are looking to do. Are you trying to load Compact 7 onto an x86 platform? Also, you posted your question to my blog on the CTP. We currently have an RTM evaluation available. You might want to try that if you are still using the CTP.Anonymous

Hello Mr. Rogers, I installed the VS2008 followed by Compact 7. I completed the installation it was late in night and I just completed the last step i.e. finish if I remember. Then I started VS2008 but I was not prompted for or did I see any set up for platform builder. Currently I have compact 7 installed but I dont know how to access platform builder from vs2008. Please Help!Anonymous

sorry if the Question seems to be dump - i just don't understand the ARM V5, V6,.. Architecture do i have to keep these checked because in this case the OS requires 48GB to be installed wail in WE7 Strd it requires only 4 GB of Hard disk space - more over am installing this to avoid a problem with WE7 Standard that it doesn't play codec for WMV files thanksAnonymous

@maher, what kind of device are you trying to build and what CPU do you want to use? If you’re targeting an x86 device, you don’t need any of the ARM architectures or the MIPS architectures. If you’re targeting ARM, which ARM licensee (Texas Instruments OMAP-family? Freescale i.XM-family, etc.) have you selected to power your device? The choice of CPU for the embedded device you’re building directly correlates to what you need to install from Compact 7. Unlike Windows Embedded Standard 7, which is provided in binary, Compact 7 is provided in source, so the size of the installation on your workstation rapidly grows when you have 3 builds (debug, checked, release) x multiple CPU and instruction set architectures (x86, MIPS, ARM v5, v6 and v7). Obviously the target build on your final device can be much smaller. We have customers build Compact devices with images around ~900k but the size of your final image will depend on the kind of functionality you want the OS to provide. Could you please elaborate on the problem you’re trying to solve, as Windows Embedded Standard 7 should have no problems playing WMV files? Installing Compact 7 won’t solve a problem a Windows Embedded Standard 7 devices.Anonymous

thank you i am installing W7EC on an HP laptop CPU us Intel core 2 duo my problem with w7ES is that it doesn't play .wmv i.e the sample video that comes with any windows because the codec is not installed i think i just need to add this feature in the Win7es regardsAnonymous
