Windows 8.1 Preview Explorer.exe crashes

After upgrading to Windows 8.1 Preview explorer.exe might crash with an error which looks similar to this:

You can disable the DLNA Shell Extension to prevent this from happening. Copy and past the following information into a text file and save it as a .reg file (.e.g “import.reg”).

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked]
"{289AF617-1CC3-42A6-926C-E6A863F0E3BA}"=""

Restart Explorer.exe or your machine afterwards.

    For me it was not the DLNA I was able to leave it in the "Approved" part of the reg.  It was Autodesk inventor 2014.  I removed the app and presto, after a reboot all worked perfectly.

    Hi FlaX, I'm not sure, it's a beta product so it might not be fixed until RTM.

    Hi, The reason why it is crashing is that you might have a DLNA device in your network that has Special characters, like ":" in the name. Either you remove the device from the network or disable the DLNA sharing of that device.

    Worked for me, but the instructions were not very helpful.  I saved a .reg file with the information and then used Registry Editor (by searching for command, running it and entering regedit) to try to import the file.  It didn't work saying it wasn't a registry file.  So, I manually created the string in Registry Editor and all is well.

    Hi Erik, just tested it and it does work. After saving the text into notepad to a file called (e.g.) "test.reg" just double-click that file and confirm. There is no need to import from the registry editor.

    This "fix" allows me to open and browse folders, but now (almost) all programs crash when I try to "Save As" The only exception I've found is that Notepad appears not to be affected (I am able to create and save new notepad files). Any thoughts on this issue?

    Hi Lawrence, can you share some details from the event viewer (if possible to access) on why explorer.exe crashed?

    This is not an issue in Windows 8. I hope this issue is fixed in the final release of 8.1.

    Thanks, but I remember following the same steps two weeks back, and last Friday it all started over, totally forgot about this fix after I applied it. Bookmarking this page just in case the issue reappears.

    Pops up with: Cannot import File LocationExplorer.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor. Help?

    I had a DLNA device attached to the network and I disabled the DLNA sharing and that took care of the issue for me. Thanks Devid!

    Thanks fixed my explorer. It didn't crash but it just hangs when right-clicking a file or open the properties using alt-enter.

    Chozan:
    1) Open notepad
    2) Copy and paste this text:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionShell ExtensionsBlocked]
    "{289AF617-1CC3-42A6-926C-E6A863F0E3BA}"=""

    3) In notepad, save this as "import.reg" (including the quotation marks " ") on e.g. your desktop.
    4) Doubleclick the import.reg on your desktop.
    5) Accept the warning.

    Hi everybody, I have the same problem described HERE. I tried to Write what u told to write but the problem Remain. Maybe someone CAN HELP ME??? THE CORRECT STRING IS:

    Had this same exact issue show up when one of the admins I work with had a DLNA enabled external hard drive on the same VLAN as me. Never tried this, but at least is affected more people than just me. Thanks for providing a fix.

    This does NOT work. It has nothing to do with the problem. The cause of the problem can vary system to system and so will the solution. I think the dev team should answer this and release some patch as it is affecting a whole lot of users !
