SQL Server 2008 R2 the last release to support Itanium

Some time back, in the context of the then recently released TCP results, I blogged about the rise the performance of the X64 platform and the threat that that may pose to the long term viability of the IA64 platform. In a blog last week the Windows Server team announced that Windows Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2010 will be the last versions of these products to support the Itanium platform. The phasing out of support will be in accordance with Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy providing mainstream support effectively until at least the 9th July 2013 and extended support until 10th July 2018.
