This did not work for me at first. HOWEVER, I switched to the Slow ring, updated everything and rebooted. Then, switched to the Fast ring, and while 10112 was both downloading and installing, I did the psexec rundll thing every 30 seconds, and also switched all network adapters off. FINALLY it updated. SP3 i7 256. - Anonymous

After the third attempt, this finally worked for me. Vdesk's comment (page 2 of comments here) led me in the right direction. I've detailed how the three attempts panned out in order to get it to work on page 26 here:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_install/surface-pro-3-wont-upgrade-to-build-10122-from/f6ec9dc6-06d9-4621-be0d-74b7da157720?page=26.
Not sure if it makes a difference, but during the third (and successful) attempt, I ran the pnpclean fix when the "preparing to install" phase hit 95% - moments before the prompt to reboot appeared... - Anonymous
January 01, 2003
Hooray! This fixed my problem. I had also done all the previous fixes, though, so anyone who is still having trouble may want to go through them all. - Anonymous

Works great.
My issue was a little different. The update was downloaded and while it seemed to hang at 34% when preparing to install it eventually kept going. It still failed to install, I was getting the restart message and windows would just load as if nothing happened.
I tried the fixes from the blog post. This fix seems somehow related (deleting drivers). Microsoft should update their blog post - Anonymous

Yep, this method worked for me this morning on a Surface Pro 3 i7 512GB SSD 16GB RAM, no problems. I had my SP3 in the Microsoft docking station with only a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo and a 28" LG LED monitor attached to the docking station. It worked perfectly. The upgrade switch back/forth to the LG extended monitor and the SP3 screen. I have it only on the LG extended monitor now. I did a clean install of Build 10074 before using updates to install Build 10122. Yep it solved my issue with my Surface Pro 3 i7 512GB SSD 16GB RAM. - Anonymous

I used psexec, but no result...i found a solution ! i have uninstalled my intel driver chipset, my ATK hotkeys asus adn my genesys USB driver, and now it's OK !!! update 10122 installed with success ! and the surprise between 10044 and 10122, the driver for intel and USB was found by the update 10122! or with the old 10044, the driver was not found ;) so, just uninstall some driver and it's ok.(Sorry for my french accent in the texte lol) - Anonymous

Tried it again and it worked. It helps if you remove all nonessential hardware -- that is to say, all hardware except your original keyboard and mouse -- before executing the RUNDLL32.EXE directive. If you use a different keyboard and/or mouse, remove these and connect your original peripherals While you're at it, you may want to remove the drivers for any hardware you have disconnected. - Anonymous

Just here to say that this solved my problem. I have a Surface Pro 3 (I5 - 256) and was on a dead end with this error. The hint here was to follow the steps and run "rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN" several times (as others said) while WU was "preparing itens for install". In fact, every time the percentage changed I ran the command. Not sure if it was needed that many times (maybe just at the end?), but it worked. Thanks!
PTBR: Isso realmente resolveu meu problema. Obrigado! - Anonymous

I had to run the command after the initialization completed and it's ready to restart. Don't forget to run from an administrator command prompt - Anonymous

Unfortunately, no amount of running this, re-running it, rebooting, waiting, etc. has fixed the issue.
The installer always sticks at 18% complete, 62% copying files.

Third time did the trick, but I don't think it was the number of times. Each time it failed I would dig through more of these comments trying slight variations. My gut says it was the guidance to run pnpclean while WU was doing its prep. The only other thing I did differently on this run was to pull the Ethernet USB adapter out when the patch started to run. - Anonymous
