Enabling Power View on Multidimensional Models for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 includes the ability to use Power View, an ad-hoc data exploration and visualization experience in Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services, to create compelling data analysis based on multidimensional models (a.k.a. SQL Server Analysis Services cubes). However, at the time of the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 release in December 2012, Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (that supports Power View for Multidimensional Models) was only available as a Community Technical Preview (CTP).

The Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 Cumulative Update 4, released on May 31, 2013, gives Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 customers the ability to create Power View reports against their existing multidimensional models.

Customers will need to upgrade their Analysis Services instance and the Reporting Services add-in for Microsoft SharePoint Server (2010 or 2013) with this Cumulative Update to create Power View reports against existing cubes.

In addition to the cumulative update mentioned above customers who upgrade their existing Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 implementation will need to install the following hot fixes for Microsoft Dynamics AX (requires PartnerSource/CustomerSource access):

KB2851882: https://mbs2.microsoft.com/Knowledgebase/KBDisplay.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;2851882
KB2851881: https://mbs2.microsoft.com/Knowledgebase/KBDisplay.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;2851881
KB2851883: https://mbs2.microsoft.com/Knowledgebase/KBDisplay.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;2851883
KB2859123: https://mbs2.microsoft.com/Knowledgebase/KBDisplay.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;2859123

These hotfixes are planned to be included in the Cumulative update for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 (CU-6).

Power View connectivity for Multidimensional Models enables Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 customers to:

  • Perform ad-hoc analysis and discover new insights from within the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 client based on pre-defined data cubes with Power View, the highly interactive, familiar, browser-based data exploration, visualization, and presentation tool.

Ad Hoc analysis

  • Analyze data by using rich visualization and interactive data exploration capabilities right from the role center with embedded Power View reports based on pre-defined data cubes.
